ODDS ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks conclude their trip through California taking on the Angels. The Dbacks began their swing by getting swept in the southern part of the state by the Dodgers before travelling to the Bay Area and sweeping the Giants tossing a pair of shutouts at them splitting the first six games playing each as the underdog. Arizona is consistent this season going 15-16 both at home and on the road after beating the Giants on Sunday, cashing the under in three straight and four of five.
The Angels had their three-game winning streak stopped with a loss to the A’s on Sunday and just haven’t found the consistency to get them a prolonged streak to make a run at the top of the AL West. The Halos are right there thanks to some recent struggles by the Astros and have the tools to put a run similar to last season together. The Angels scored one run in each of the final two games with the A’s over the weekend and the under is 7-3 in their last 10. However, LA has scored 31 runs in the last five games started by Garrett Richards cashing the over each time.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Jeremy Hellickson (4-3, 5.29 ERA) struggled against the Dodges in his last start giving up six hits and five runs with two home runs in 3.2 innings. He seemingly turned his season around after a rough beginning, going 3-0 with a 3.28 ERA in his previous four outings.
Hellickson has impressive numbers against the Angels in his career going 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 29.2 innings in six games, five of them starts.
Garrett Richards (6-4, 3.97 ERA) bounced back from his worst outing of the season, limiting the Rays to two runs on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in seven innings on Thursday. He gave up six runs and didn’t get out of the first inning June 6 at New York.
Richards hasn’t faced the Dbacks since June 17, 2012 when he tossed eight shutout innings allowing four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“That’s a great outing from Garrett. The biggest thing you saw was strike one. He was in the zone early and with great stuff. He threw some really impressive breaking balls, both curveballs and sliders, and he pitched ahead in the count where he could use all his stuff.” – Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia after Garrett Richards allowed four hits in seven innings Thursday.
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Diamondbacks have made some adjustments to their starting rotation due to ineffectiveness and a lack of innings pitched, which has taxed the team’s bullpen. Opening Day starter Josh Collmenter was moved to the pen and replaced in the rotation by Allen Webster, while youngsters Robbie Ray and Archie Bradley continue to get starts. Webster made his debut Saturday shutting down the Giants on two hits in 5.2 innings. Jeremy Hellickson remains in the rotation – for now – but his spot is in jeopardy. He’s pitched better recently but that’s not saying much because he couldn’t be much worse.
PROP TALK
Like most teams the Angels’ second, third and fourth hitters are the strength of their lineup. Theirs is probably a little more concentrated than most, though. The threesome of Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun has pulled double weight this season, combining to hit two-thirds of the team’s home runs. Trout and Pujols each have 18 and Calhoun has six with the trio leading the club in RBIs. “Mike and Albert are our two best on-base guys, so Kole’s an important part of our lineup,” manager Mike Scioscia said. Those three are always in the middle of Angels’ rallies.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
It’s obvious Arizona prefers Northern California to Southern California. The Dbacks are coming off a sweep at SF after getting swept by the Dodgers. A return to the southern part of the state probably isn’t what they want but, at least they aren’t playing the Dodgers. Unfortunately they have to face one of the better starters in the AL in Garrett Richards, who responded nicely from his worst outing of the year, with Jeremy Hellickson, who has struggled most of the season. Opponents hit .281 against Hellickson this season and even the Angels can get to him.
