A trio of games will be on tap on FOX Saturday Baseball this weekend, and the West Coast game could be a fun one between the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks (27-32 SU, -2.41 Units) and the San Francisco Giants (34-26 SU, +5.78 Units).
ODDS ANALYSIS
So far this year, the games have been split relatively evenly between these two teams. The D'Backs have the slight 4-3 edge in the series, but what is truly notable is the fact that the road team has won four of the last five.
Granted, there has been a lot of baseball played between April 19 the last time these two met and now, but Arizona has historically been able to stick in there with its division rivals.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Neither Ryan Vogelsong nor Josh Collmenter, the two pitchers expected to be on the bump on Saturday, have been all that much to write home about of late.
Vogelsong more or less is what he is at this point. He's a middle-of-the-road pitcher who had one extremely good year out of nowhere in 2012 and really hasn't done anything since that point.
The journeyman is 4-4 this season with a 4.52 ERA, and his metrics suggest that he could be in a lot of trouble going forward.
Vogelsong has allowed 10 home runs already this season in just 63.2 innings, and if he sticks in the Giants' rotation, he could easily allow 30 this year because of it.
Collmenter doesn't want to talk about giving up home runs. He conceded four blasts against the Mets in his most recent start, giving him 13 dingers given up this season.
Granted, the righty's fly ball to home run ratio is just far higher than it should be at over 18 percent, but still, for a man who has never conceded more than 18 home runs in a season, this is a real concern.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"Not very good obviously. Any time you're giving up balls out of the park, you're not doing a very good job. I haven't been doing a good job of controlling counts and getting ahead and making them hit my pitch." – Diamondbacks starting pitcher Josh Collmenter on his recent woes
SITUATIONAL BETTING
Long relief could come into play in this one, and that means that we are probably going to see Yusmeiro Petit for the Giants. Petit won't overwhelm hitters with his fastball, and he isn't going to strike many out, but he doesn't put anyone on base via balls (seven walks this year in 32.1 innings of work), and that lets him coast through innings quickly.
PROP TALK
If Collmenter is going to be giving up home runs in this game, you have to look at Buster Posey and Brandon Belt as potential candidates to have a big impact on the game.
These two men are outstanding sluggers, and though they only have 17 dingers between them, they’re slugging .467 and .519 respectively and could be in for a big day.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Diamondbacks have admitted that they’re concerned with Collmenter and the dip in his velocity. He isn't even getting his fastball up to the plate at 90 MPH, and that's a bad sign going forward in this game against a team which ranks fifth in the bigs in slugging percentage.
As long as Vogelsong doesn't blow up, this should be a game for the hosts.
