ODDS ANALYSIS
The New York Yankees make their first trip to the West Coast this season, looking to build off a sweep over the Royals to reclaim first place in the tight AL East, while the Oakland Athletics are simply trying to string a few wins together.
The Yanks went through a stretch where they won just once in 11 games and were in the red 11.6 units but snapped out with a sweep of Kansas City playing as the favorite each time. The Yanks are a bit better on the road up 1.89 units for the year.
Oakland enters the weekend with the worst record in the American League and the fewest home wins in baseball while being the least profitable team. The A’s dropped the final two of a three-game set with Detroit going in the red 15 units in their 22 home games and 20.49 units on the moneyline overall. The A’s played all three games with Detroit under the total but have been a strong play on the over at home going 16-6.
PITCHING MATCHUP
New York’s Nathan Eovaldi (4-1, 4.27 ERA) had one of his finer outings this season giving up just one run in seven-plus innings on Memorial Day against the Royals. His day was made easier getting staked to an eight run lead after one inning. He struck out four with one walk in his 103-pitch outing.
Eovaldi has faced the Athletics twice in his career going 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA and 1.62 WHIP giving up 15 hits and six walks in 13 innings.
Jesse Hahn (2-4, 3.69 ERA) gave up four singles and went the distance for his first career shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Tigers on Monday. He pitched around three errors and induced three double-play balls while walking just one with five strikeouts in the 112-pitch effort.
Hahn will make his 10th start of the season and 22nd career when he faces the Yankees for the first time.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“From inning No. 1 he had his sinker going today. He was throwing it with conviction, with confidence, both sides of the plate, you name it. He was some kind of disgusting with his sinker. He was calm, cool and collected all day.” – A’s catcher Stephen Vogt on Jesse Hahn’s shutout
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
Poor defense and bad relief pitching make for a long season and that’s what the A’s are dealing with. The Athletics have committed the most errors in the majors leading to an unusually high number of unearned runs. Though the staff ERA looks good, the losses keep piling up. It’s also been an adventure when manager Bob Melvin goes to the pen, which has the highest ERA in baseball and the fewest saves. The return of Sean Doolittle will help, but Melvin is limited to the moves he can make late in games with a lack of confidence in the group.
PROP TALK
Alex Rodriguez is back to playing baseball and at 39 he’s still putting up good numbers. Rodriguez enters the weekend batting .455 in his last six games, collecting six hits and scoring four runs in a three-game sweep of the AL Champion Royals. ARod hit a three-run home run, his 11th of the season, in Wednesday’s victory to become the AL’s all-time RBI leader. Rodriguez hasn’t played much in the last two years and looks refreshed leading the Yankees’ offensive attack.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Yankees snapped out of slump that saw them lose 10 times in 11 games with an improbable sweep over the Royals, who had the best record in the American League. The Yanks now pay a visit to Oakland for a series with the AL-worst Athletics. New York received stellar starting pitching during its sweep of the Royals after some brutal outings during the losing skid. Just shows you how quickly things can turn in this game.
The A’s are hoping their luck turns. They followed a season-high three-game win streak by losing the final two to Detroit and struggled against a makeshift Tigers rotation. The bullpen has been a major concern but that should change with Sean Doolittle back in the mix after coming off the DL. The A’s are still confident they can make a move up the standings, but they need to make it soon.
