A 27-17 home record will be on the line this week for the New York Yankees (50-41 SU, +1.06 Units). They'll be featured on ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball when they take on the Baltimore Orioles (46-45 SU, -1.09 Units) in the middle of game of this pivotal three-game series.
ODDS ANALYSIS
The home and away splits for the Yankees aren't as impressive for bettors as you would think even though they’re 5.5-games better at home than on the road this year. New York is +1.36 units in its first 44 home games, which is nothing to be ashamed of. However, on the road, this team is only down 0.30 units even though it’s a game below .500.
PITCHING MATCHUP
This season has been a transitioning one for Kevin Gausman. The youngster has pitched at the Double-A, Triple-A and major league levels this year, and he continues to get optioned wherever the team needs him so he can continue to pitch.
As a big leaguer, he is 1-1 with a 5.00 ERA this season, but considering the fact that he is 24-years old, there are high hopes for his future.
The Yankees are hoping that Ivan Nova takes another big step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery on Wednesday night. The righty has only made four starts since coming off of the injury, and has topped out at 92 pitches and 6.2 innings of work.
Nova has been okay at 1-3 with a 3.42 ERA, but the fact of the matter is that he has lost all of his starts against teams not named the Philadelphia Phillies since his return.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It could be here or Norfolk or Bowie. We want to make sure his innings get built up and he ends up in a place where he can take the steps necessary as the future unfolds. We want to solve that and give us a chance to win up here." – Orioles manager Buck Showalter on the handling of Gausman
SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Orioles really have some flame throwers down in that bullpen. Brad Brach, Brian Matusz, Chaz Roe, Darren O'Day and Zach Britton all have K/9 ratios well above 9.00, and all of them could come on and pitch in this one.
Gausman figures to be limited to around five or six frames in this game, but unlike with so many other teams, we have confidence in this bullpen if this is what it comes down to.
PROP TALK
We never imagined that Alex Rodriguez would be the Yankees' MVP this year, but that truly has been the case.
The beleaguered slugger now has 19 homers and 52 RBIs on the season, and even though he hit a rough patch last weekend going 1-for-8 with five strikeouts, he’s still driven in at least one run in seven of his last 10 games with four homers in that stretch.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Gausman and Nova are both wild unknowns right now, but the bullpens for both of these teams are deep and could be in for long nights.
Though we would normally promote the over in this situation, we think the over in the first five innings is the way to go. There could easily be seven runs scored in that span. However, that doesn't mean this is a lock of an over.
From that standpoint, we'd rather have the team at plus odds in this one, that clearly being the Orioles, as this really is a tossup game.
