ODDS ANALYSIS

Things are not going well for the Red Sox as they continue to tumble in the AL East standings, holding down last place after getting swept at home by the Blue Jays over the weekend. And it was ugly. The Sox blew an 8-1 lead and lost 13-10 in Friday’s game and gave up 13 again in Sunday’s loss. Boston finished the week winless and is down 16.62 units on the moneyline for the year and 7.63 units at home.

The Braves blew a chance to gain ground in the NL East dropping two of three to the first place Mets over the weekend. Atlanta had its own breakdown Sunday, losing an 8-3 lead and the game 10-8. The Braves cashed the over for the fourth straight time Sunday and the over is 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and 7-0 in the last seven starts made by Julio Teheran.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Julio Teheran (4-2, 4.78 ERA) pitched will scattering four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision with San Diego on Thursday. He dominated through the middle innings before being pulled after loading the bases with no out in the eighth. The bullpen allowed all three runners to score and the Braves lost in extras. He’s regained his aggressive approach and relied heavily on his four-seam fastball the last two outings.

Teheran makes his 14th start of the season in his first appearance against the Red Sox.

Wade Miley (5-6, 5.07 ERA) was pulled after giving up five runs in four innings Thursday at Baltimore and wasn’t too happy about it, getting in a verbal altercation with manager John Farrell. He had nothing to complain about after giving up nine hits and three homers with runs in each inning he worked. Location has been an issue for him, scattering 24 hits, including four home runs over his past three starts, lasting just four innings in two of them.

Miley’s faced the Braves five times, making four starts, with a 5.92 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 24.1 innings against them.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“I used my slider and my changeup a lot today. They worked really good and my curveball too. I’ve been working really hard for this and using more of my fastballs to set up the other pitches.” – Braves’ pitcher Julio Teheran after retiring 10 straight batters and striking out seven Thursday against San Diego.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

It was a troublesome week for the Red Sox and they’re hopeful things can still change. Pitcher Wade Miley and manager John Farrell engaged in a shouting match Thursday in Baltimore, slugger David Ortiz was unhappy about being benched in a game and in a season full of frustration and disappointment, Friday may have been the worst. Nine straight Toronto hitters reached base to start the seventh inning. All nine of them scored. This is how the Sox suffered a 13-10 loss in a game they led 8-1 after three innings. “Well, I wouldn’t write this team off,” said Farrell. “This is still a team that has got a long track record of individual performance, and we have to put some things together as a team in all phases.”

PROP TALK

Always considered a talent, the speedy Cameron Maybin was hindered by injuries his last two seasons in San Diego, never living up to his potential. Coming to the Braves in a trade just prior to the start of the regular season, Maybin is playing the best ball of his career and is on a tear at the plate. Maybin is hitting .444 with 10 RBIs in 10 games to increase his average nearly 50 points. He had three hits against the Mets on Saturday, his fourth three-hit game in his last 10, and has 20 hits in that span. Hitting in front of Freddie Freeman in the order, Maybin gets plenty of pitches to hit and has taken advantage.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The big story here will be how Red Sox starter Wade Miley does in his first outing since his meltdown last week in Baltimore. Poor pitching and arguing with your boss are not conducive to long-term employment and Miley has been ineffective his last three outings – but the entire Sox team has been that way for some time. The Braves have had issues with their bullpen blowing games, but they’ve been able to score plenty of runs and the pen problem shouldn’t be an issue this time around.
