There are only 30 miles separating the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels. However, with the 77-58 Dodgers surging towards the postseason, they may as well be a million miles away from the 69-67 Halos heading into the second half of their ESPN Wednesday Night Baseball doubleheader.
ODDS ANALYSIS
What is in common with these two teams is the fact that they’re killing bettors this year.
The Angels are down 4.60 units after a good series at home against the Rangers. The Dodgers, even though they have pulled 7.5-games clear of the Giants and seem to be a lock for a date with the Mets or the Nationals in the NLDS, are -8.12 units in 2015.
PITCHING MATCHUP
This is one of those games that Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke are going to be watching, which is bad news for Dodgers backers. Mat Latos is scheduled to be on the bump on this day, but Don Mattingly has made it known that there will be a discussion as to whether to keep him in the rotation for this outing.
Latos, who has a 6.56 ERA since coming to LA, is clearly in some hot water.
Garrett Richards has had a couple head-scratching starts of late. He allowed nine runs in five innings against the Blue Jays on August 23, and after a good start against Cleveland in which he struck out nine without walking a batter, he turned around and allowed five walks in just six innings with one strikeout against Texas.
Richards is 13-10 with a 3.77 ERA this season, but has been maddeningly inconsistent overall.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's hard to get into a rhythm. I kind of settled in, put up two zeroes on the board, found my release point. By the time I do that, I'm already out of the game." – Dodgers starter Mat Latos complaining about Mattingly giving him the hook relatively early in all of his starts
SITUATIONAL BETTING
At least the back of the Dodgers bullpen appears to be getting the job done more often than not.
Kenley Jansen has thrown three straight perfect innings, needing a total of just 27 pitches in the process. He's now got eight consecutive scoreless frames to his credit, lowering his ERA to 2.16.
What’s most impressive about Jansen is his stunning 67/5 K/BB ratio.
PROP TALK
A 4-for-4 day in Cleveland on August 30 has really helped out Mike Trout. His batting average remains under .300 by just a tick, but he’s been peppering the ball all over the field.
Trout has been showing good discipline at the plate of late, walking four times in his last six games, and his OBP of .482 in this stretch of six games shows just that. He's a solid play, even at relatively square numbers on Wednesday night against an opponent like Latos.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
We just don't trust Latos, and we frankly never have since being traded to the Dodgers. Clearly, Mattingly doesn't want him in the rotation, but he doesn't have many better options to fall back on.
As a result, this is yet another example of a game which the Dodgers are going to lose, especially in an American League park against a lineup which is hitting the ball reasonably well.
Look for the middle of that Halos offense to shine in this game, as it'll be another short outing for Latos and another win for the Angels.
Angels 6, Dodgers 3
