ODDS ANALYSIS
Arizona bettors should be cautious about the series in Los Angeles. The Dbacks are just 1-11 in their last 12 games at Dodger Stadium following Monday’s 9-3 loss and lost the first four games played there this season.
Arizona plated only four runs while getting swept in LA earlier this season and didn’t face aces Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke. They miss the two again this time around. The Dbacks have been money behind Jeremy Hellickson lately, going 4-0 up 4.71 units over his last four starts with the under at 2-1-1 in that span.
The Dodgers were glad to see the St. Louis Cardinals leave town and look to get better against an Arizona team they’ve had plenty of success against, especially at home. LA won the last eight at home over the Dbacks following Monday’s win. The Dodgers have been good at home but dropped three of four to the Cards over the weekend and were down 3.07 units in that series. LA remains a solid home play up 6.11 units for the season.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Jeremy Hellickson (4-3, 4.88 ERA) allowed two runs over six innings Friday in a victory over the Mets. He’s pitched at least six innings and given up three runs of fewer in each of his last four starts, the last three of which have been wins.
Hellickson was touched for six hits and three runs getting a no-decision in LA’s 6-4 home win on May 2. Overall he’s 0-1 with a 7.56 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers.
Brett Anderson (2-4, 3.29 ERA) tossed 7.2 innings of two-run ball in a loss to the Cardinals on Friday giving up just four hits. He’s allowed more than three earned runs just once in 11 starts but hasn’t received much offensive support. He will induce a steady diet of ground balls and has only allowed four home runs in 63 innings this season.
Anderson has twice recorded a quality start against the Dbacks and twice he’s been left with a no-decision. He threw six shutout innings at them on May 3 getting a no-decision in a 1-0 win and has a 3.00 ERA in three career starts.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“The past two weeks, we haven’t been playing our best baseball, in my opinion. Just not everything is clicking. It’ been OK, but I wouldn’t say anything’s standing out positive. Just a lot of OK.” – Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
Sometimes the moves don’t work out even if they are the right ones to make. On a whole the Dodgers bullpen has been a positive this season, but last week the group was exposed, particularly against the NL best St. Louis Cardinals. Sunday marked the third time in five games the Dodgers blew a lead in the eighth inning or later and the bridge to closer Kenley Jansen has started to crumble. To protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning Sunday, the Dodgers turned to ... Juan Nicasio? “We haven’t been, obviously, as consistent as we were early, when everyone seemed to be betting their outs,” manager Don Mattingly said. Finding the links between the starters and Jansen has clearly become a problem.
PROP TALK
Paul Goldschmidt is a force in the middle of the Arizona roster and has put up triple-crown numbers this season. Goldy leads the Dbacks in all three triple-crown categories and is among the league leaders as well. He enjoys facing the Dodgers hitting at a .400 clip against them entering this series, and is even better against Brett Anderson, batting .500 with four hits, including a home run, off him in his career. Goldschmidt has nine career home runs in Dodger Stadium, the most in any away ballpark, and went six for 13 with a homer in the three-game series there earlier this season.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Dodgers have cleaned up on the NL teams not from St. Louis or San Francisco this season, and they particularly like facing the Diamondbacks, who they’ve owned while playing at Dodger Stadium recently. The Dodgers had their hands full with the Cards in a weekend series, dropping three of four and were lethargic on offense against the Majors’ best pitching staff. With Yasiel Puig back in the lineup, along with Joc Pederson, the Dodgers should be able to mount an offensive attack against the Dbacks. However, their bats seem to take a hiatus when Brett Anderson throws, averaging just three runs per game when he starts. They should exceed that total against Jeremy Hellickson, who’s been good over his last three starts, but still takes a 7.56 ERA against LA into the game.
