ODDS ANALYSIS

All it took for the Dodgers to break out of their funk was a trip to Coors Field. LA pounded out 18 hits in the series opener scoring as many runs in one inning as they did in their previous six road games combined. The Dodgers scored six times in the sixth inning of their 11-4 win, the same number of times they crossed the plate in their last six away games in which they went 1-5 with four shutouts.

The teams cashed the over Monday and have exceeded the scoreline five times in seven games this season and the over is 5-1 in six games in Denver dating to the final series last year. But with a couple of fine young arms on the bump this has the potential to be a pitchers duel. The under is 3-0 in Mike Bolsinger’s last three starts and 4-1 overall.

PITCHING MATCHUP

LA’s Mike Bolsinger (3-1, 1.15 ERA) has been steady since tossed into the rotation on Apr. 23. He suffered his first loss of the season after giving up two runs on seven hits over six innings at St. Louis on Friday. The two earned runs allowed matched the total from his previous four starts combined, raising his road ERA to 2.31, compared to 0.46 in three home starts.

Bolsinger tossed six shutout innings in a 1-0 home win on May 17, giving up three hits with six strikeouts in his first decision against the Rockies. He owns a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against them and will make his first start at Coors Field.

Chad Bettis (2-0, 2.96 ERA) took a perfect game into the seventh inning and a no-hitter into the eighth in his last outing. He settled for the win giving up two hits with seven strikeouts over eight shutout innings and has been marvelous in his last two turns surrendering just two runs over 16.1 frames.

Bettis allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings at LA on May 14, taking a no-decision in his first start of the season. He’s faced the Dodgers five times in his career with a 5.93 ERA and 2.12 WHIP in 13.2 innings.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“He was coming off his best outing and he topped even that one. He commanded his fastball and threw his secondary pitches for strikes whenever he wanted.” – Rockies manager Walt Weiss after Chad Bettis took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a win at Philadelphia on Friday

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

Two top hitting home run clubs in the National League in a homer-friendly yard could mean plenty of fireworks. The Dodgers, despite problems producing runs recently, head into this series leading the NL in long balls with the Rockies close behind. The Rockies had a power surge in their recent road trip, hammering eight homers in a three-game sweep at Philadelphia and, rather surprisingly, have more home runs on the road than they do at Coors Field. A majority of games on the road, however, somewhat explains the discrepancy. The Dodgers have seven players with at least five homers, led by Joc Pederson.

PROP TALK

If Colorado’s newfound ability to score is a trend, Nolan Arenado is a key force driving it. With Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez having a tough time finding their power stroke after missing much of last season, Arenado has stepped into an offensive leadership role. He enjoyed a productive road trip with eight hits in 23 at-bats adding four home runs and 10 RBIs in the six games and leads the club in home runs and RBIs. Arenado is a streaky hitter and he’s been on a roll lately raising his average from .257 to .284 with 12 hits and five home runs in seven games since a four-hit, four-RBI game against the Giants on May 24. Watch for Arenado to greet LA starter Mike Bolsinger in his first appearance at Coors Field.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Two young hurlers with impressive numbers could be involved in a rare pitchers duel at Coors Field. Colorado’s Chad Bettis carried a shutout into the ninth inning in his last start at Coors before tiring after 8.1 innings and two earned runs. He followed that carrying a no-hitter into the eighth and has looked real sharp.

LA’s Mike Bolsinger has also been good since taking a spot in the rotation, but has never pitched in Coors Field and that has to be intimidating for a young pitcher. The Rockies have been swinging the bats well and take advantage of Bolsinger’s first appearance in the mile high atmosphere.
