Dodgers try to regain home dominance, host Brewers Saturday on FSWI and SNLA

The Brewers dug themselves such a deep hole during the first part of the season that even an eight-game winning streak and a stretch of nine wins in 11 games won’t prevent them from being sellers at the trade deadline.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Following a quick three-game homestand where the Crew dropped a pair to the Braves, they hit the road where they’ve been successful recently. The Brewers won all seven games during a recent trip to Philadelphia and Cincinnati, improving to 21-22 where they’re up 2.81 units. The teams split a four-game set in Milwaukee in early May in manager Craig Counsell’s first series since taking over.

The Dodgers split the first six games of a 10-game homestand to close out their first half of the season with embarrassing losses to the Philadelphia and New York. It’s a bit surprising since they have one of the better home records in baseball at 30-16 in the black 1.86 units on the moneyline. LA needs to stay hot at home because they have the worst road record of any division leader. But the Dodgers are just 5-6 in their last 11 at Dodger Stadium, down 7.25 units

PITCHING MATCHUP

Taylor Jungmann (3-1, 2.43 ERA) stayed hot firing eight innings of one-run ball in a 6-1 win over the Reds on Sunday. The rookie continues to make a case for keeping a roster spot when the injured Wily Peralta returns. Jungmann has been a welcome addition to a rotation that was struggling prior to his arrival. The Brewers won three of his last four starts with the lone loss a 2-0 shutout at New York.

Jungmann has a 2.67 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in four road starts but will be tested when he faces the Dodgers for the first time in his seventh career start.

With Carlos Frias on the shelf nursing a sore back, the Dodgers have not named a starter. A start by committee is possible, which manager Don Mattingly used unsuccessfully in Monday’s loss to Philadelphia. Zach Lee has also emerged as a candidate to start.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“It’s not just what he’s been doing pitching it’s what he brings every day here [in the clubhouse]. He’s a leader. Having him beside my locker every day and talking to him, he puts a lot stuff in my mind, growing me as a hitter and professionally. It’s not only me, it’s everybody. When you have a guy having a future Hall of Fame career, it’s amazing having him on your team.” – Brewers Carlos Gomez on Francisco Rodriguez, who moved into eighth place in career saves.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

Khris Davis returned to the Brewers this week after missing a month with a knee injury, but while he was in the starting lineup in his first game back, manager Craig Counsell said Gerardo Parra will remain the team’s starting left fielder for the time being. Parra tops the Brewers’ regulars with a .309 average and has been especially hot over the last few weeks, batting .333 with six home runs, nine doubles and 12 RBIs since Davis went down on May 30. “He’s kind of taken over that leadoff spot,” Counsell said. “Gerardo’s going to get the bulk of the playing time. It didn’t make me feel good to take Gerardo out of the lineup. It didn’t.”

PROP TALK

When players leave San Diego they become better hitters. Not sure why that happens, but it does. LA’s Yasmani Grandal is a good example. Grandal hit just .224 in his last two seasons in San Diego and led the team with 15 home runs in 2014. He’s taken over as the Dodgers’ regular backstop hitting .277 with 14 homers and 36 RBIs heading into the weekend. He had a monster series in Milwaukee when the teams met earlier this season going 8 for 12 (.667) with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, and nine RBI’s

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Outside of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, the Dodgers rotation has been below average lately and is largely responsible for the team’s sub-par play. Brett Anderson and Brian Bolsinger have had their struggles and Carlos Frias landed on the DL with a back issue. The All-Star break couldn’t have come at a better time for LA. The Dodgers will be looking for starting pitching at the deadline and Cole Hamel’s name has been linked by former teammate Jimmy Rollins.
