For a man who is supposed to be the ace of the Baltimore Orioles (27-30 SU, -2.98 Units) staff, it should be stunning to see Wei-Yin Chen sitting on just one win this season.
He'll look for his second victory on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox (27-32 SU, -11.08 Units).
PITCHING MATCHUP
Chen has been excellent this season against Boston, allowing just two earned runs over 12.1 innings of work. He did walk five batters in the first meeting of the year, and he allowed five unearned runs as well, but we know that he has the potential to really be strong here.
The Taiwanese pitcher has been fairly standard this year across the board with his stats. His BABIP of .266 might be a tad low, but his 2.25 BB/9 and 7.54 K/9 are both par for the course stats by his own standards.
What is surprising though, is that his FIP is 4.43, a far cry from his 3.18 ERA. Generally speaking, that means that things could get worse for Chen before they get better, something you'll have to consider in live betting if he gets into some jams.
Rick Porcello will be opposing Chen on this night, and that could mean good things for the Baltimore offense. Porcello is 4-5 with a 5.01 ERA, but he has really been prone to the big inning thanks to the fact that he has given up 11 homers already on the campaign.
Porcello has allowed five multi-run innings to hit the board against him in his last three starts, all of which have been losses.
Live bettors should be aware that big innings are always possible when Porcello is out there on the mound, so if an inning starts with a leadoff hit or walk, get ready to pounce.
ADVANCED STATS
Not a single man on the Red Sox is batting .300 this year, but luck is starting to finally get on Boston's side just a bit offensively. The team is only a few weeks removed from having a BABIP of under .240, but now, that number is back up to .275. That's still lower than where it should be for a team with such a positive park factor playing at Fenway Park with its short porches in the outfields, but at least there is some positive variance.
Not surprisingly, the Red Sox enter this series having picked up three straight wins thanks to an offense which has scored at least four runs in four straight games. That's not the most impressive stat in the world, but as regression to the mean takes place, Boston will have a chance to score even more runs.
TALKING BULLPENS
Zach Britton is all of a sudden on fire for the O's. This is a man who has fired 10.2 straight zeroes up onto the board, and he has only allowed six hits, just one of which was of the extra base hit variety.
More impressive about this span is the fact that Britton has walked just one batter, and he has 13 strikeouts. Furthermore, he has been economical, throwing an average of 11 pitches or fewer per inning in seven of those outings.
Still, do keep in mind that Britton has been really bad against the Red Sox in his career, posting a 4.88 career ERA. He already has one blown save this season versus Boston as well, and that 1.96 ERA of his this season could be in for a hit if he has to come into this game Wednesday night, especially after he went for 1.2 innings on Tuesday night.
