ODDS ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks’ eight-game California road trip got off to a rocky start when they were swept by the Dodgers extending their losing streak to four. Next stop on the three-city tour has the Snakes in San Francisco to battle the Giants, who have struggled at home.
The G-Men come off a winning road trip and return to ATT Park where they lost five straight times before departing, and were down 4.48 units during their seven-game homestand. SF enters the weekend series just two games over .500 at home in the red 1.68 units overall. The Giants lead the Majors in hitting but score only 4.2 runs and the under is 17-11-2 in their 30 home games.
Arizona had a successful trip to the Bay Area in mid-April taking three of four from SF finishing the series up 3.12 units, scoring 21 times in those three victories. The Dbacks have won four of the first seven games in the season series with all of them coming in the first two weeks of the season. Arizona is a nice play on the over with Josh Collmenter on the hill going 9-3 in his 12 starts.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Josh Collmenter (3-6, 5.24 ERA) couldn’t keep the ball in the yard Sunday, surrendering four home runs and five runs total on nine hits over six innings in a loss to the Mets. He’s winless in his last six starts going 0-3 with a 7.76 ERA allowing nine home runs.
Collmenter tossed a four-hit shutout at the Giants in a 9-0 win at ATT Park on Apr. 17 and is 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA in seven games – three starts – over 28 career innings there.
Ryan Vogelsong (4-4, 4.52 ERA) suffered a loss Sunday at Philadelphia, taken for five runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings. He hasn’t been able to replicate his results from an outstanding May so far this month, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in 12.2 innings in two June starts.
Vogelsong was battered for seven runs on six hits, including a pair of homers, in a 7-6 loss at Arizona on Apr. 7. He gave up five hits and four walks over two relief innings on Apr. 17 and is 3-7 with a 4.85 ERA in 105.2 innings in 23 appearances – 16 starts – lifetime against Arizona.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“I think it helps, too, knowing that there’s not one single person in this lineup that thinks that they have to carry the load. You know if you don’t get the job done, somebody behind you will.” – Giants first baseman Brandon Belt
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
It’s rather amazing Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt has put up the numbers he has this season with little support lately behind him in the lineup. The Dbacks have struggled to make opposing teams pay for pitching around their No. 3 hitter. Entering Wednesday’s game at Los Angeles, Arizona’s cleanup hitters were a combined 10 for 43 (.233) with just two extra base hits and three RBIs in the past 10 games. Manager Chip Hale has inserted rookie Yasmany Tomas into that slot and the move may be paying off. Tomas had two hits Wednesday, including his second homer of the season as part of a back-to-back with Goldschmidt. “Tomas has done a pretty job for a rookie,” Hale said.
PROP TALK
Giants’ second baseman Joe Panik is an unsung hero on the team that leads the Majors in hitting and the second-year player is no longer a secret. Panik had three hits in Wednesday’s win at the Mets, including his sixth home run of the year, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Panik hit .407 during the streak with four home runs and 11 RBIs and eight multi-hit games during that span. Panik has five hits in 13 career at-bats against Collmenter and is 12 for 27 in six games against the Dbacks this season.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Giants have been a bit of an enigma this season. They’ve played very well on the road and hit nearly .300 as a team in away games, compared to a .500 record and an average over 40 points lower at home. They lost the final five games of a seven-game homestand before embarking on a road trip that saw them go 4-2 in Philadelphia and New York. I don’t see this team keeping up the pace offensively that they’ve been on and guys like Nori Aoki, Matt Duffy, Brandon Belt and Panik are not as good as their numbers at this stage of the season indicate and that’s why the Giants are pushing the Dodges for the top spot in the NL West. They will, however, get to Josh Collmenter in this one and come away with a home win.
