ODDS ANALYSIS

I don’t think anyone saw this train wreck coming. The Sox have been absolutely dreadful this season and it’s hard to imagine with the players they have on the roster. Boston is down there with Philadelphia, Miami and Milwaukee among the least profitable teams in baseball in the red 13.17 units overall on the moneyline. They’ve been a little better at home, but not much, going 15-14 down 4.18 units.

It’s been an opposite scenario for the Braves, who find themselves within spitting distance in the NL East even after hovering around the .500 mark all season. Atlanta has been a money maker on the over this season, playing above the scoreline 37 times through their first 60 games while cashing the over three times in four starts made by Williams Perez.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Williams Perez (2-0, 2.78) labored through three long innings against San Diego on Wednesday but settled down and persevered through seven innings, allowing just one unearned run and four hits in the 4-1 win. He’s allowed one or zero runs in four of his five starts going beyond five innings three times.

Perez will make his sixth career start in his first appearance against the Red Sox.

Rick Porcello (4-6, 5.26 ERA) is scheduled to go for the Sox after getting tagged for 10 hits and five runs in 5.1 innings Wednesday at Baltimore. He’s allowed fewer than three runs in a start just four times in his 12 turns and saw his ERA rise to 5.26 with a 1.31 WHIP. At least he hasn’t given up a home run in his last two starts.

Porcello has faced the Braves once, tossing 6.1 innings with five hits and three runs in a 7-4 win as a member of the Detroit Tigers on Apr. 27, 2013

QUOTE TO NOTE

“That was one of the turn-ons with him, with [GM] John Hart and our Minor League people who saw him. They said, ‘This guy’s got some moxie. He’s got some composure, He doesn’t rattle. He makes pitches.’ And that’s tough to teach ... he’s got a confidence about him.” – Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez on the composure pitcher Williams Perez

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

The frustration of an underachieving squad has finally caught up with the Red Sox, who had two separate incidents between players and manager John Farrell. Starting pitcher Wade Miley became upset in the team’s dugout, apparently after being told he was done for the night after just four innings, and had a meltdown with Farrell during Thursday’s game against the Orioles. Miley had already given up three homers and five runs on nine hits and was trailing 5-3 when he left. Miley was animated in his discussion with Farrell, jawing pretty good and gesturing with his hands. He exited down the ramp to the clubhouse as Farrell followed him closely. Meanwhile DH David Ortiz was called “washed up” by a reporter, which he took offense to, then was benched Wednesday against the O’s. Not pleased with the goings on, Ortiz answered questions with his back facing reporters.

PROP TALK

A change of scenery did wonders for Nick Markakis. Not that he wasn’t good during his nine seasons with the Orioles, but Markakis has improved his numbers so far in his first season with the Braves. He’s batted up and down the lineup and has apparently settled into the cleanup spot behind Freddie Freeman. Markakis is very familiar with Rick Porcello and Fenway Park from his AL days and has the opportunity for some RBI numbers in the four hole behind Freeman, Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin, who form a potent top of the order.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

It’s as if the Sox can’t get out of their own way. They swept the A’s last weekend and looked good doing it. After that uplifting series they strutted into Baltimore and took it in the shorts, getting beat three straight and reverting back to the inept offensive ways that have damaged their season. And if getting swept wasn’t bad enough, Wade Miley and David Ortiz are whining about their playing time. Here’s a word of advice to those guys: Do your job and you don’t have to worry about getting pulled in the fourth inning after giving up three bombs and five runs, or hitting .219 for a team thirsty for offense. It appears the Sox are a bigger mess than we imagined and now manager John Farrell has to stroke egos AND get these clowns to perform. Good luck.
