ODDS ANALYSIS

While the New York Mets offense has fallen off since an 11-game win streak, the Baltimore Orioles have gone in the other direction following a five-game skid. The clubs meet in an interleague matchup playing the second of a quick two-game set Wednesday in New York.

Since dropping to the bottom of the AL East standings with a 7-10 record the O’s went 5-1 with 39 runs scored and a .297 team batting average to climb above .500. Their offense leveled off somewhat over the weekend in Tampa but the O’s still took two of three with Sunday’s 4-2 win. The O’s cashed the under in all three games over the weekend but their high-scoring offense has the over at 13-9-1 for the year.

Since their impressive run gave them a lead in the NL East, the Mets have gone 3-7 with 28 runs scored and a .217 average. Sunday’s home loss to Washington was their second straight by a 1-0 score and they dropped three of four in the series. During their 3-7 skid the Mets are down 3.65 units on the moneyline but maintain a favorable season line up 6.89 units through their first 26 games. The Mets played their final three games against the Nats under the total and the under is 5-2 in their last seven.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Ubaldo Jimenez (2-1, 1.59 ERA) continued his strong season getting the win after allowing two unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts in seven innings against the White Sox on Wednesday. All three hits were singles and the Sox plated two runs without a hit leaving the infield.

Jimenez is 2-3 with a 3.40 ERA in six career starts against the Mets but was tagged for five earned runs with six walks in 3.2 innings in his last start against NY.

Jacob deGrom (2-3, 3.34 ERA) suffered an uncharacteristic home loss last time out giving up five runs – three earned – on five hits with two walks over 5.1 innings to the Nationals on Thursday. He has allowed at least five runs in consecutive starts for the first time in his career.

deGrom looks to rebound when he makes his first career start against Baltimore.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“As we said when we won 11 in a row, hey, we’re going to have a downtime. We didn’t think it was going to be right away, but we’re going to have one. You’ve just got to play through it.” – Mets manager Terry Collins

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

The Orioles are looking forward to some normalcy in their routine after playing as the home team in a series at Tampa over the weekend. The O’s were displaced after the public unrest in downtown Baltimore last week with MLB moving their home games to Florida. Prior to that the O’s had two games postponed and another played in a closed stadium with no spectators present. I’m not sure if there’s anything normal about playing a series in New York but I guess the players will be happy to get back on track with their schedule even if the first series is in front of the rabid New York fans.

PROP TALK

Adam Jones has hit safely in 18 of 23 games entering the series and leads the AL with a .402 average. All the guy does is hit. He has nine multi-hit games with Sunday’s four-hit effort already his third of the season and he has yet to go hitless in consecutive games. We like Jones to step up for a few hits off Mets starter Jacob deGrom to power the O’s offense, just like he’s done all season.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The O’s are climbing back into the thick of the AL East race thanks to an impressive offense led by Adam Jones, who went 4 for 4 Sunday to lift his batting average over .400. The Orioles have picked it up on the hill as well with better efforts from their starters leading to more wins. Ubaldo Jimenez has been stellar in his four starts with a 1.59 ERA and 0.79 WHIP allowing just 10 hits and eight walks over 22.2 innings. He’s in for another good outing against the struggling Mets offense.

The Mets have fallen hard after an 11-game winning streak had everyone’s hopes sky high for the return of the Miracle Mets. If the miracle returns it couldn’t come against a better club. The 1969 Mets, who earned the moniker, knocked off the heavily favored Orioles in the World Series that year to claim their first world championship in their eighth season of existence. We’re only a month into the season and there’s plenty of baseball yet to be played. The Mets may end up contending for the division title come September, but right now they’re a struggling club that the Orioles take advantage of.
