Kansas City Royals, New York Mets return from marathon in Game 2 of World Series on FOX

World-Series-Game-2-Picks

If Game 2 of the World Series is anything near as good as Game 1 is, baseball fans are in for a treat. Around 16 hours after the conclusion of Tuesday's clash which dripped into Wednesday, the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals will be back at it in Game 2 of the Fall Classic.

ODDS ANALYSIS

This series was basically a pick 'em before it started, and Game 1 just barely saw the Mets favored at a -115 margin. We suspect we're going to see similar in this one when the odds are posted for Game 2 in the morning.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Jacob deGrom has proven this year that he's a bona fide ace. All you can ask for this time of year out of any of your starting pitchers is to be a battler, and deGrom has been the epitome of just that.

We're a little worried that he hasn't had his best stuff in the playoffs, but you wouldn't know it based on looking at the results. Don't believe us? Just ask the 27 men who have struck out against deGrom in his 20 innings of work in the playoffs.

Johnny Cueto proved a lot when he put together the winning Game 5 against the Astros, but he has to get his last start against Toronto out of his mind. The righty has a history of being bothered on the road in big time starts, and that's why Ned Yost made it a point to pitch him in Game 2, making sure that he strictly pitches at home here in the World Series.

You'd like to think that the leash will be short on Cueto, but after such a long Game 1, he might be stuck on the mound a little longer than usual.

SITUATIONAL BETTING

After the marathon Game 1, there are a lot of pitchers you can count out of the equation. If the Mets need a long reliever, we have no idea where they're going, knowing that both Bartolo Colon and Jonathon Niese shouldn't be available. The Royals, more importantly, probably can't count on Kelvin Herrera, who threw 35 pitches.

Of course, the real question comes if the Mets need a save. Jeurys Familia failed to get four outs to end Game 1 back in the ninth inning. He was literally virtually perfect before the home run to Alex Gordon, and we don't know whether we're going to see any ill-effects from that first blown save in six tries in these playoffs.

PROP TALK

Big players make big plays in big games. David Wright hit the ball incredibly well in Game 1 of this series, coming up with a pair of hits. For our money, he looked the most comfortable at the plate against Kansas City's pitching, and with a pair of multi-hit games in his last three, we think he's got a good chance to get aboard in this one, too.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Royals had about a million chances to win Game 1, and they finally got the job done. They fought back from down 3-1 in the sixth inning to tie things up, and at that point, they really looked like they had a huge edge with their bullpen going against the Mets' pen. Then they came back from allowing their first unearned run in 136 innings to pick up the first game-tying home run in the ninth inning of a World Series game since 2001, and they did so off of a pitcher who had given up exactly two hits in 9.2 innings here in the playoffs. Both Wade Davis and Chris Young each had a frame in which they struck out the side. They loaded the bases in the 12th inning against Bartolo Colon, of all people, and they did so again in the 14th when they finally won it.

But they can't get too high.

These Mets are for real, and this pitching staff is ridiculous. They'll win Game 2 as we see it, as deGrom will throw like an ace once again to tie this series up in much shorter fashion than the five hour, 14 inning marathon we all just watched on Tuesday.
