The New York Mets suffered a catastrophic loss on Wednesday against the Nationals to drop to 49-46 and +2.73 units for the season. They’re now four games back in the loss column in the NL East instead of only two, and could be set to go on a long skid with the way the Los Angeles Dodgers are playing coming into this series in Flushing.
ODDS ANALYSIS
The Dodgers are interesting to try to figure out this year. Sure, they’re 12-games above .500, but down 9.33 units for the year. Then again, if you take out what Clayton Kershaw has cost the team, 7.89 units, you've got a team which is right around that breakeven mark.
For good measure, Friday's starter, Zack Greinke, has led LA to a 13-6 record and +3.16 units thus far in his 19 starts in 2015.
PITCHING MATCHUP
For our money, Greinke is putting together one of the best streaks we have seen any pitcher have in quite some time. He’s strung together 43.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run, the fourth longest streak in big league history.
In that stretch, batters are hitting just .129 against Greinke, and he has a 42/4 K/BB ratio.
Jon Niese is more or less the sacrificial lamb for the Mets on Friday. Niese though, has actually held his own of late. Sure, it looks pedestrian in comparison to Greinke, but the lefty has a 2.01 ERA since June 11, and that’s made him a tradable commodity if New York elects to do so at the deadline.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"And he said, 'It's pretty easy. All my stuff is pretty nasty right now.' And he was right. He wasn't exaggerating." – Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis on Zack Greinke and how he has been pitching of late
SITUATIONAL BETTING
All of a sudden, there are a lot of questions about the Mets bullpen. They haven't been good over the course of the second half of the season. Alex Torres and Bobby Parnell have both had really tough times on the bump, and closer Jeurys Familia has been knocked around as well.
PROP TALK
Remember when Joc Pederson was tearing up baseball? He still has 20 homers, which is still an impressive mark, but he hasn't gone yard since June 29, and in that span, he’s batting .156. The rookie has clearly hit a wall at this point, and we couldn't trust him with our hard-earned money.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The fact that Greinke is on the mound is going to make it really tough to bet against the Dodgers in this one.
Though we do think that Greinke is inevitably going to end up giving up a run in this one, the Mets are just disheartened at the moment. We think they’re in line for a massive step in the wrong direction and out of the playoff chase. This is going to be another one of these brutal disappointments which brings out the boo birds at Citi Field.
