ODDS ANALYSIS

Two teams with heightened preseason expectations have tip toed through the first half of the year. Sure there is plenty of baseball yet to be played, but neither has shown us they have the makeup to put a run together to get back into contention. Seattle has difficulty scoring runs and San Diego has a tough time preventing them. The M’s scored nine times during their three-game weekend series in Anaheim, losing the final two games scoring twice in each. They played below the scoreline in all three and the under is 4-1-1 in their last six games overall.

Since being shutout for the 11th time this season Wednesday in San Francisco, the Padres scored 23 times in the next four games but split those by allowing 23 runs. San Diego cashed the over in three of the four games and is a strong play on the over going 24-13-1 at Petco Park and 47-29-2 overall. The teams split a two-game set in Seattle in mid-May with the Mariners racking up a season-high run total in their 11-4 win over Ian Kennedy.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Mike Montgomery (2-2, 2.04 ERA) has been outstanding in five starts in place of the injured James Paxton and is coming off a five-hit shutout of the Royals on Tuesday in which he struck out 10 without walking a batter. His only other road start was an 8-1 win at Houston when he gave up six hits and a run over six innings.

Montgomery has connections with two current San Diego players as he was traded along with Wil Myers from Kansas City to Tampa Bay for James Shields back in 2012.

Ian Kennedy (4-6, 5.09 ERA) held the Giants to five hits and one earned run over six innings Wednesday, but was charged with five unearned runs in the 6-0 loss. He’s 2-1 with a 2.40 ERA in five June starts following a rough first two months of the season when he went 2-5 with a 7.15 ERA over eight outings.

Kennedy gave up eight hits and five earned in 4.2 innings during an 11-4 loss at Seattle on May 12 in his first career appearance against the M’s. He allowed two homers in that game and has surrendered 15 this season, one shy of last season’s 33-game total.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“It’s a team move. He’s doing it for the team. He’s giving up RBI opportunities. Matty’s willingness to do it is just an all-in team approach, like ‘Hey I’ll do whatever.’ That, right there, sent a message to the whole team, that this is a team.” – Padres interim manager Pat Murphy on moving Matt Kemp to the leadoff spot in the batting order.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

The Padres have lost more games than they anticipated at this point in the season. They’re now losing players at the same rate. One day after second baseman Cory Spangenberg was removed with a bruised knee, third baseman Will Middlebrooks was lost in the seventh inning Sunday when he rolled his ankle stepping on a weighted bat in the Arizona on-deck circle while chasing a foul pop fly. Neither injury is considered serious but the loss takes a toll on the infield positions that are thin to be begin with. The good news for San Diego is that several infielders have the versatility to play anywhere with Alexi Amarista and Yangervis Solarte most likely to fill the holes left by the injured players. Both have played extensively this season but offensive production is lacking. Center fielder Wil Myers is still on the DL after surgery to remove bone spurs from his wrist.

PROP TALK

Since his blistering start to the season, Nelson Cruz has been stuck in neutral with just one home run in 85 at-bats in June. He has an opportunity to break out of his power slump facing Ian Kennedy and Padres. With no designated hitter used in the National League parks Cruz will play right field, which is not such a bad thing for the M’s. Cruz has hit .335 with 16 home runs in 43 games starting in right field, compared to .261 with three homers in 30 games as DH. He also faces Ian Kennedy, who’s allowed 15 homers on the year.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Mariners just can’t seem to get it right. Try as they might runs are just hard to come by; which makes it look like they aren’t trying. And when you’re top offensive weapon is struggling the chore becomes more difficult. They did smack Ian Kennedy and the Padres around back in May when the clubs met in Seattle, but Kennedy has apparently gotten his stuff together while the M’s haven’t. Mike Montgomery has been good but there’s a reason why the M’s left him at Triple-A for the first two months of the year.
