Noah Syndergaard enjoys pitching at Citi Field and the Mets appreciate his miniscule numbers. The rookie righty goes for his sixth straight win on his home mound when the Mets host the Red Sox in the final of a three-game set. New York put up impressive offensive numbers on a recent road trip, cashing the over eight times on the nine-game trip.
ODDS ANALYSIS
One part of the Mets game that has been worrisome all season was their play on the road. It looks like they figured that part out. Prior to returning home for their series with the Red Sox, the Mets embarked on a nine-game roadie that was to tell us just where the club stood. They are standing tall after a productive 8-1 trip that saw them average 9.1 runs reaching double-figures in three games and scoring nine times in two others. During their first 118 games of the season the Mets scored double-figures just five times. Before we get all giddy about those offensive numbers, realize three games were in the thin air of Coors Field and the last four were against Philadelphia’s woeful pitching staff. The over was 8-1 on the road trip and is 10-1 in the last 11 overall.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Wade Miley (10-10, 4.51 ERA) gave up 13 hits and five runs over 6.2 innings in a loss to the White Sox last time out. It was the third time in his last six turns he surrendered at least nine hits and he’s allowed 47 hits over 39.1 innings during that span. While he hasn’t been great at any point this season, he has pitched a bit better with a 3.96 ERA since the All-Star break.
The lefty has a 3.09 ERA in two career starts at Citi Field, taking a no-decision both times. He hasn’t pitched there since July 1, 2013.
Noah Syndergaard (8-6, 3.19 ERA) collected the first road win of his career last time out, pitching five innings at Philadelphia. He returns to Citi Field, where he’s 7-1 with a 1.82 ERA in nine starts. The rookie has completed just five innings in each of his last two starts and the Mets confirmed they will skip one of his turns in early September, though they’ll wait until a road trip to do it.
Syndergaard will face the Red Sox for the first time.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“It’s about the players and our job is to make them better. We’ve already seen how much more comfortable some of the younger guys are feeling as they gain more experience and, consequently, their talents are coming out. They’re showing us what they can do.” – Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
When the Mets tied their franchise record for home runs in a month with five games left to go in August, it seemed like a matter of time before their new-look offense would strike again. The Mets broke and extended their team record with a trio of blasts Thursday against the Phillies. The Mets blasted 13 home runs in their four-game sweep of the Phils, including a game-record eight in Monday’s 16-7 waltz, giving them 43 for the month. Eight different players homered in the Philadelphia series with four – Yoenis Cespedes, Travis d’Arnaud, Michael Cuddyer and Wilmer Flores – connecting on multiple blasts. As a club the Mets lead all of baseball in home runs since July 25, averaging nearly two per game. Cespedes has eight homers this month, Curtis Granderson has six and d’Arnaud five to lead the attack.
PROP TALK
Yoenis Cespedes was just what the Mets needed to awaken an offense that was sleep walking through much of the season. His offensive heroics were a big reason why the Mets completed an 8-1 road trip by averaging 9.1 runs. Cespedes hit .350 over the final eight games of the trip, collecting six home runs and 15 RBIs while scoring 11 times. Cespedes is batting .303 with eight home runs since joining the Mets and his 25 home runs between Detroit and New York, leaving him one shy of his season career best set with Oakland in 2013.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Mets and Syndergaard have been nearly unbeatable at Citi Field this season and that streak is likely to continue against the last-place Red Sox. The Mets will limit the innings of Syndergaard and Matt Harvey down the stretch with the rookie likely getting a breather when New York heads back on the road next week. In the meantime, he’s going all out as the Mets look to add more distance between themselves and the Nationals.
