The New York Mets have been blessed with an incredibly easy schedule the rest of the way this year. Part of that easy slate features a home series with the Boston Red Sox, one which will wrap up on TBS on Sunday.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Wade Miley has had a particularly tough time locating pitches of late. He can throw strikes, but the problem he's having is that everything is getting left over the plate.
From a live betting standpoint, that means a ton of opportunities for the red hot Mets to get on the scoreboard against a pitcher who allows a ton of contact.
In his last start against the White Sox, Miley allowed a stunning 13 hits and a walk over just 6.2 innings of work. He allowed five runs, three of which came in the seventh inning which he never got out of, but matters could've been much worse considering the fact that Chicago stranded umpteen runners during the game.
The Mets are going to counter with Noah Syndergaard, a man we will be talking about quite a bit since he is such a pivotal piece to the puzzle in this game.
Syndergaard is 8-6 with a 3.19 ERA, and his splits suggest that he could be a Cy Young contender in the future. The righty has 126 strikeouts in just 115.2 innings of work, a K/9 of 10.46, and he has only allowed 28 walks to go with those Ks.
ADVANCED STATS
The big thing here with Syndergaard is how he has been pitching of late. The righty has already thrown over 160 innings this year, and the Mets really wanted to try to limit his innings pitched this season. Maybe there's a reason for that, and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the rash of Tommy John surgeries this team has had to endure with its pitching staff of late.
Syndergaard is still picking up a lot of strikeouts, but he isn't lasting long in games and is requiring a ton of pitches to get through innings. If the righty can't figure out how to throw less than the 19+ pitches per inning he has averaged in his last four starts, he's ultimately going to be shut down before the playoffs.
Against a Boston team which has shown an ability to take pitches, live bettors need to be very aware of the fact that a short Syndergaard outing will end up causing this New York bullpen to throw a ton of innings.
TALKING BULLPENS
Speaking of bullpens though, the Red Sox have the worse of the two units. The team has yet to really settle on a bona fide closer, though we would bet that Junichi Tazawa is the man who would be called upon more often than not.
The reason for that though, is because this unit as a whole has a 4.31 ERA. Take the injured Koji Uehara out of the equation, and that number jumps up to 4.72.
Simply put, no bullpen is going to figure out how to be effective when it is allowing a run every other inning which it pitches. The Red Sox have had that problem all year long, and they are going to continue to have it for the rest of the year unless some of the relievers who have been cold end up catching some fire, something that live bettors probably can't reasonably expect in this game.
