ODDS ANALYSIS
The Cardinals own the best record in the Majors and are the most profitable team in baseball up 17.41 units on the year. The Cards handled the Dodgers rather easily taking three of four games over the weekend ending in the black 2.6 units, and conclude their road trip in Colorado where the best pitching staff got roughed up for 11 runs and 16 hits in Monday’s loss.
St. Louis hasn’t scored a lot of runs this season but they don’t need to with a staff ERA at 2.58 after limiting LA to six runs in four games. The combination has made the Cards a strong play on the under as they finished below the scoreline in each of the last three games at Los Angeles with the under at 7-3 in their last 10 games. Overall the under is 34-22-2 through the Cards’ first 58 games.
Colorado has alternated wins and losses over the last nine games following Monday’s 11-3 blowout of the Cards. With a scoreline in double figures in each of the Rockies first eight games of this homestand the over is 5-3 and 16-12-1 overall at Coors Field
PITCHING MATCHUP
Carlos Martinez (6-2, 2.94 ERA) has allowed just three runs over his last 32.1 innings and is coming off a career-best 11 strikeout performance while limiting the Dodgers to one run in seven innings in Friday’s win. It was his first run allowed since May 15.
Martinez has made one appearance in relief at Coors Field and allowed four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. He’s allowed seven earned runs in 4.1 innings over four relief outings against the Rockies and will start for the first time against them.
Chad Bettis (2-0, 2.70 ERA) tossed six strong innings allowing two runs – one earned – and five hits in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Wednesday. He is 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA in his last three starts holding opponents to a .165 batting average with 19 strikeouts and only five walks.
Bettis had his start pushed back for an extra day’s rest before his first career start against the Cardinals. He pitched one inning giving up a run in each of his two relief appearances against them.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“It’s just complete – a complete team. It’s a team of different guys who can do different things, very flexible. We have a similar mindset for our at-bats. We grind it out and come up with the big hit, a single, walk, whatever is needed. We don’t have time to pout or feel bad about an at-bat. Until that last out is made you feel you have a chance to win here.” – Cardinals right fielder Jason Heyward
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Cardinals own the best record in baseball and their ability to score late has helped them to five wins when trailing after seven innings. Last season, the club had just three such victories. The Cards rallied for two eighth-inning runs on Friday to beat the Dodgers 2-1, and scored three times in the same frame on Sunday in a 4-2 win. The eighth inning continues to be a most productive frame for the Cards, who have scored 33 times in the eighth inning this season. “It’s what we talk about with those relentless at-bats,” manager Mike Matheny said. “If they keep going about it like that, I don’t think we’re ever going to be out of a game.”
PROP TALK
Troy Tulowitzki has found his groove and that’s good news for the Rockies. Tulo’s first inning three-run jack on Monday carried the Rockies to a huge win over the NL-best Cardinals and was part of a two-hit night. The All-Star shortstop has been on quite a tear over his last eight games going 17 for 33 to raise his average from .266 to .310. “I’m getting better,” Tulowitzki said after Monday’s game. “But at the same time I think I can be a lot better.” He’s been really good lately and a healthy Tulowitzki can inflict a lot of damage on the best pitchers. He’s faced Carlos Martinez just once in his career and Tulo gets his first hit off him while driving in a few.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
As well as the Cardinals have played all season it’s hard to imagine them losing another game. The pitching is outstanding, they don’t hurt themselves on defense and the hitting is timely. Their staff will be tested against a Rockies club that has played well of late, despite losing two of three at home to the Marlins. Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki are hitting and that’s a good sign for the Rockies, who have relied heavily on DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado for most of the offense. It the two vets can have an upswing while staying healthy the Rox could make some noise in the NL West. However, the Cardinals are the best team in the Majors for a reason and Carlos Martinez has been the best starter for the past month on the best staff.
