MLB Betting Online: The Washington Nationals, who currently sit in first place in the National League East, will look to widen the gap over the second-place New York Mets in a four-game series ending at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 4th at Citi Field in New York, New York.

The Mets have been dealt some bad news this week, learning the severity of second baseman Neil Walker’s back injury and starting pitcher Steven Matz’s shoulder injury might be much much worse than the team initially hoped. These injuries could make a late push for a Wild Card spot much more difficult in MLB betting.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The Nationals are 78-55 heading into this road series against the Mets and possess a very comfortable lead over the rest of the National League East. Washington will try and finish this six-game road trip the way they started it, with a win. The team is fresh off a sweep of Philadelphia.

The Mets are in second place in the division, nine games back of the Nationals and are currently two and a half games back of the second Wild Card spot in the National League. Facing a tough team like the Nationals is a good way to find out what kind of fight New York still has in it. This is the first of two series between the two teams this month, with the National hosting this Mets later this month.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

The Nationals will start Max Scherzer Sunday against the Mets. The right-hander is 15-7 so far this season with a 2.89 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. Scherzer comes into this one off a very strong showing against the Phillies on August 30th. He had a no-hit shutout heading into the sixth inning, but a double by Freddy Galvis in the sixth and home run by Ryan Howard in the seventh ended hopes of both.

Still, Scherzer escaped with the win, allowing just three hits and two runs in the 3-2 victory. He’s captured three wins in his last three starts and will look to make it four straight against the Mets Sunday.

Seth Lugo will be the starting pitcher for the Mets Sunday. The 26-year-old is 2-2 this season and will look to push his record to above .500 in this one. Lugo was called up this summer and had a nice major league debut — throwing two shutout inning against the Cubs in a 10-2 victory on July 1st.

In his most recent start against the Marlins on August 30th, Lugo allowed five hits and two runs, including one home run, in six innings pitched. Like Scherzer, he is also on a winning streak coming into this one, trying for his third straight victory as a starter.

LIVE BETTING

The Mets offense is led by Yoenis Cespedes. The center fielder is batting .295 right now with 27 home runs, 68 RBIs and an OPS of .937. The offense will be without Neil Walker Sunday, who has a herniated disc in his back.

The injury could be season-ending. Asdrubal Cabrera and Curtis Granderson are other key pieces the lineup and will need to step up in Walker’s absence. The offense has looked strong in late August, putting up nine runs or more in four of its final 11 games of the month.

Daniel Murphy has been leading the way for the Nationals at the plate this year. The second baseman has been electric this season. He is averaging .344 at the plate right now with 25 home runs and 68 RBIs. He has a .992 OPS this season.

He gets some help from Wilson Ramos, Bryce Harper and Danny Espinosa on offense as well, the three have combined for 63 more home runs this year. Harper hasn’t been his usual dominant self this year but is capable of having a huge game at a moment’s notice.

QUICK PICK

Despite being on the road, the Nationals have the stronger pitcher on the mound Sunday in Scherzer and a more complete offense. They are dominating the National League East and should keep it up in this one.

Scherzer is in the mix for the Cy Young and is facing a Mets offense which isn’t expected to put up much resistance. All signs point toward a road win for the Nationals.
