The best rivalry in baseball kicks off with a three game series from Friday to Sunday when the New York Yankees face the Boston Red Sox. This series doesn’t have its usual luster with the Yankees currently residing in the cellar of the AL East, but don’t tell that to fans of these teams.

ODDS ANALYSIS
As division rivals, these teams met 19 teams last season with the Yankees getting the better end of the deal. The Yankees won 11 of the 19 games and outscored the Red Sox by 20 runs over the course of these games.
The Yankees are one of the most popular teams to bet year in and year out, so it’s no surprise that they have lost bettors $590 this year based on $100 moneyline bets. New York has gotten killed by the AL West this year, holding a 4-8 record against those teams.
Boston is another popular team to bet and that’s why even though the Red Sox are 12-10 on the season, they’ve lost their bettors money. Boston is just 6-7 against the AL East to date.
Run support has been an issue for the Yankees an eighth of the way through the season. The Yankees are averaging 3.6 runs per game, one of the worst totals in the American League, and no one in their starting lineup has an OPS above .800.
Starlin Castro has been the best Yankee in terms of OPS this season with a .794 mark. Castro has proven to be worth what the Yankees gave the Cubs for him in the offseason and has discovered some power. He leads the team in RBIs and is cost controlled for another three years to boot.
Dustin Pedroia has had a great start to the season for the Red Sox and is a big part of why Boston has scored 18 more runs than any other team in the American League. Pedroia is OPSing .909 and is hitting the ball with power once again.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Nathan Eovaldi will likely come to the mound for the Yankees and although he is 1-2, he has gotten a bit unlucky this season. Eovaldi is striking out batters at a good clip with a 10.22 K/9, and his WHIP is just 1.14. He’s also limited his walks, allowing a free pass just once every five innings. Eovaldi was solid his last time out, giving up just two hits and two walks in seven innings of work against the Rangers en route to tallying his first win of the year.
Boston paid big money to David Price in the offseason, but Price has yet to prove he was worth such a hefty investment. After Price shined in Tampa for years and Toronto for a short rental last season, he has given up a lot of contact this season.
Price is allowing a hit an inning and his WHIP is the highest it’s been since 2009. His numbers are probably the result of short term variance, but so are his strikeout numbers. He is currently striking out more than half the batters he faces.
LIVE BETTING SCENARIO
The Red Sox have had some big issues with their bullpen this season. Their five most pitched relievers all have ERAs that are at least in the threes and even Craig Kimbrel hasn’t lived up to his hype.
If the game is close, betting on the Yankees if they are down a run or two is worth a shot.
