ODDS ANALYSIS
The Orioles return home for this two game set with Boston and that’s great news for the Birds after a bit of a rough road trip through Chicago, Oakland and San Francisco. They did, however, end the trip on a positive note with a come from behind win against the Giants, clinching two series wins on the trip.
Baltimore has been two different teams at home and away. The team is the best team at home with a 39-17 record, but find themselves well below .500 on the road.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, are 26-25 on the road. They’re also just 4-6 in their first 10 meetings against Baltimore this season.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
It looks to be a battle of the aces on Wednesday with David Price matching up against Chris Tillman.
It’s been a bit of an uneven year for Price who got a massive payday in the offseason and has been mediocre for the Sox, though he has shown flashes of his dominance.
Still, overall, the veteran southpaw is 10-8 with a 4.29 ERA and 1.283 WHIP, but he does give the Sox plenty of innings as he leads the league in innings pitched. He’s also first in hits allowed.
The O’s bats have struggled against lefties this season, but Price has been an exception as they’ve faced him twice, scoring eight combined runs in 13 innings, hitting three home runs.
The Bird’s offense is all-or-nothing and Price’s 19 strikeouts against them here in 2016 illustrates that.
While Price’s stats against Baltimore this season are lackluster, he’s found success against the team in his career, going 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA and 1.182 WHP.
On the other side of this matchup, Orioles’ starter Chris Tillman has had the better season. The 28-year old right-hander is 15-4 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.212 WHIP.
He’s thrown back-to-back quality starts after a couple rougher outings to end July.
Of Tillman’s 25 starts, the Orioles have won 21 of them as Tillman—if nothing else—is able to keep the team in the game before turning the ball over to a very strong Orioles’ bullpen. Given Baltimore’s bats and their potential to hit the ball out of the yard and put up runs in a hurry, that’s all the Birds need from him again here on Wednesday.
In his career against the Sox, Tillman is 10-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 19 starts. He’s only faced them once in 2016, going seven innings, allowing one run and five hits.
LIVE BETTING
The Orioles offense has been cold for a month and a half now, though eight late runs by the offense on Sunday could be just what the doctor ordered.
Baltimore’s offense has the power to put up a ton of runs on any given day. Boston may have more than 100 more runs than the Birds on the year, but the O’s out homered the Sox by 30. Jonathan Schoop hit his 18th home run for the O’s on Sunday, giving the team six players with at least that many bombs.
Mark Trumbo leads the way for baseball with his 34 home runs and after going cold, he’s seeming to get back on track. The same cannot be said for Chris Davis who struck out four times in a 0-for-5 day.
While the O’s offense is able to score plenty of runs, the Sox offense has been more predictable and more productive overall. They showed just what they could do on Sunday, beating the Diamondbacks 16-2, nine of them off Zach Grienke in less than two innings. Three homers in that game by Mookie Betts gives him 26 for the year as he continues to prove he’s one of the game’s best players.
QUICK PICK
A late win on Sunday should provide a nice boost for a team that’s had offensive and pitching issues over the last week or so.
The trip to Oakland went very poorly with the team barely able to avoid a four game sweep. The series in San Francisco went a bit better and that puts them in a better position mentally as they head home—where they’ve the best team in baseball.
Look for the Orioles to come away with the win. Tillman has been very good in Baltimore while Price has been spotty. While the O’s have struggled with lefties, Steve Pearce made a pinch hit appearance Sunday and should see playing time on Tuesday. That helps the order. The O’s are also one of those teams that plays up to its competition.
MLB Odds: Orioles 7, Red Sox 4
