Chicago hosts the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series this week. While they are at home, the White Sox will be facing a tough foe and will likely be the underdog in at least two of the games. Boston has played well of late and gets a key starting pitcher back this week for his season debut.

This series will be contested from Monday, May 29 through Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Pitching Matchups

Boston left-hander David Price gets the start on Monday. He has missed the whole season but is one of the better hurlers in the major leagues. The White Sox will counter with David Holmberg. He has a miniscule 0.87 ERA throwing in relief but has a career ERA of 5.47 and could have trouble against a potent Red Sox lineup.

On Tuesday, the team’s aces will face off. Boston’s Chris Sale is 5-2 on the year with a 2.34 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. Sale has struck out 101 batters in 73 innings and will aim to keep his ultra-successful season rolling on. The White Sox will send out Jose Quintana. He has struggled this season with a 2-6 record and 4.82 ERA but is one of the better hurlers in the majors.

In the finale, the Red Sox will send out left-hander Drew Pomeranz. He is 4-3 with a 4.70 ERA but has solid peripheral numbers and could see his ERA continue to regress. The White Sox will feature Mike Pelfrey, who is 2-4 with a 4.41 ERA. He has only given up one run in each of his past two outings but could have trouble continuing that trend.

Injury Update

Price missed the first few months of the season with an elbow injury. If he was earlier in his career doctors would have recommended surgery, which would have kept him out the whole year, but instead Price just rested and rehabilitated.

He has thrown two minor league rehab starts and struggled, which could give bettors pause on backing him despite his strong track record. Price is an elite talent who is hard to beat when on his game.

However, the injury concern as well as some rustiness could be trouble for Price. The White Sox hope to give him a rude welcome, and the park is conducive to hitters. The prospect of Price, Sale and Rick Porcello at the top of the rotation is impressive, but it remains to be seen how well Price throws coming off the elbow injury.

Player To Watch

Todd Frazier -- The Red Sox are throwing a pair of elite left-handers in this series, as Sale and Price are tough on opposing hitters. The White Sox third baseman is a key player in those games as he should hit near the middle of the order and usually does well against lefties.

Frazier hit 40 home runs last season but has struggled out of the gate. He is only batting .186 this season with six homers and 21 RBIs. While his batting average hasn’t been any better against left-handers, Frazier has an on-base percentage of .354 and an OPS of .759 against them and will aim to find some success.

Runs could be at a premium for Chicago in this series, and if Frazier can connect for a home run or two it would be a big boost for the White Sox.
