With the scene shifting to the Bronx, the Yankees are hoping for a better outcome than what transpired last weekend. Boston swept New York at Fenway Park, winning the Sunday night contest 8-7. That was part of a six-game losing skid that sent the pin-stripers deeper in the AL East standings.

ODDS ANALYSIS
For a change, the Yankees did just about everything right in Wednesday’s 7-0 win over the Orioles. Stuck in last place in the AL East and riding a six-game losing streak, New York got a stellar pitching performance from a starter other than Masahiro Tanaka, turned three double-plays, banged out 10 hits, and matched their highest run total in a game since the first week of the season.
Of course it means nothing if the Yankees can’t build on the solid effort. “Something like this can get a team going. Hopefully it does,” manager Joe Girardi said afterwards. Looking for some payback can also get a team going. Just last weekend the Red Sox swept the Yankees in a three-game set in Boston, scoring 20 runs while banking 3.11 units on the moneyline.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Steven Wright (2-3, 1.67 ERA) is off to a strong start this season, going at least six innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer in all five of his starts. He surrendered two runs over six innings in a loss to the White Sox on Tuesday. Three of his four walks issued on the evening came in the third inning leading to a run that was the difference.
Free passes have been a concern for the knuckleballer but that’s the price he pays with his main pitch. Wright has issued 15 walks in his 32.1 innings, leading to a 1.14 WHIP despite allowing just 22 hits and posting a 1.67 ERA. Wright is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA over 13.0 innings in his two lifetime appearances at Yankee Stadium.
This spot in the rotation belongs to Luis Severino (0-4, 6.31 ERA), though the Yankees haven’t officially announced their pitching plans for the weekend series. Severino took the loss in Baltimore on Tuesday, allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits while walking two and striking out four over six innings.
The outing was actually one of the righty’s better starts of the season and lowered his ERA, though it’s still an unsightly 6.31 through 25.2 innings. He didn’t help his cause by committing two errors and surrendering a pair of home runs to Mark Trumbo. Hyped as a potential breakout star, Severino has looked far from that through his first five outings.
LIVE BETTING
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is doing his best to make his final season a memorable one, and so far what he’s doing is working. Ortiz again came up big, fueling the Boston lineup with a home run and three RBIs in Wednesday’s win over the White Sox. “David is in such a good spot offensively. You kind of marvel at how consistent and powerful he is,” Sox manager John Farrell said.
More importantly, Ortiz’s bomb came off left-hander Carlos Rodon and, in typical Ortiz fashion, it came at the perfect time. Whenever the BoSox lineup is in a funk, it always seems to be Ortiz who delivers when the chips are down. Even at 40 years old Ortiz continues to rake with 17 of his first 28 hits going for extra bases. The rest of the AL is going to be awfully happy to see him retire if he keeps this up.
QUICK PICK
The Yanks will try to dig themselves out of the AL East cellar and there is no better way to start than knocking off the division leaders. If taking on the first place team isn’t enough, how about that team being the hated Red Sox And knowing that you were swept in their yard just last weekend.
It’s been a horrible start for the Bombers but they aren’t as bad as their early-season record indicates. The bats will come around and the pitching will improve. They can’t get much worse, after all. Severino has struggled but he will take note of C.C. Sabathia’s turnaround performance and deliver one of his own.
MLB Odds: New York 5, Boston 4
