ODDS ANALYSIS
Aaron Judge is slumping and, thus, the Yankees’ offense has gone cold. There are a few hold outs like Didi Gregorius swinging well, but for the most part, the Bronx Bombers haven’t been nearly as prolific offensively as they were in the first half.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have gotten sparks from Eduardo Nunez and Rafael Devers to help their offensive attack.
Boston’s offense is still not as strong as it should be given the names on in the lineup, but they’ve scored enough to string together an eight-game winning streak, including scoring eight runs on Wednesday.
The Yankees one-upped the Sox, scoring 11 on Wednesday for just their third win in the last eight games.
While the offensive explosion was fun, it was just the second time in seven games New York scored more than two runs.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Chris Sale pitches for the Red Sox. He’s having a season in line with that of Randy Johnson.
The southpaw doesn’t have the stature of the Big Unit, but he has the dominance. That is for sure.
Sale has struck out at least 10 in 15 games this season. One of those 10 games cam in his last start where he sat down 13 batters. He sat down 13 against the Yankees the last time he faced them, too.
The veteran southpaw leads the league in wins, innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, WHIP and FIP among several other categories. He’s 14-4 with a 2.57 ERA and 0.880 WHIP in 23 starts.
He’s one to go deep into games, racking up the strikeouts in the process.
Five of Sale’s last seven starts have been shutouts for the duration of his time on the mound.
As a member of the Red Sox, Sale is 0-1 in two starts against the Yankees, allowing two earned runs over 15.2 innings. He’s allowed 11 hits and just one walk during those games. In his career, he’s 4-2 with a 1.17 ERA in 21 games—nine starts—against New York.
The Yankee’s counterpart to Sale is, so far, not announced. It would be C.C. Sabathia’s turn in the rotation.
Sabathia is now the aging veteran, but he was once the flame throwing southpaw dominating this league. Those days are behind him, but the lefty can still get big outs and big wins.
He’s 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 19 starts. His walk rate and home run rate are both up from his career norms while his strikeout rate is nearly half of the rate Sale is striking people out.
Sabathia isn’t pitching well right now. He’s allowed four runs in each of his last three starts, allowing 12 total runs in 13.1 innings. Nevertheless, Boston had two hits and no runs over six innings the last time he faced them and haven’t scored in the 14 innings he’s pitched against them this year.
LIVE BETTING
Both teams revamped their pens prior to the non-waiver trade deadline with the Sox adding Addison Reed to set up Craig Kimbrel and the Yankees adding Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson in front of Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman.
Chapman’s strike out numbers over the last month haven’t been nearly the dominant numbers we’re used to seeing from the Yankee’s closer, but the entire Yankee bullpen seems to be producing outs right now which is the main goal after all.
Given the depth and quality of both pens, don’t look for much late inning heroics on Sunday night. This game may well be over by the sixth or seventh inning.
QUICK PICK
Sabathia has a magic formula for the Red Sox, but he’s matched up with Chris Sale and it’s hard to bet against him given his dominance this season. It’s also hard to expect another six-plus innings of shutout baseball against Boston.
Boston has also been playing better baseball lately compared to the Yankees. The Red Sox have won eight in a row as of Wednesday.
Take the Sox on the road over the Evil Empire. Until Judge gets back to form along with Gary Sanchez and the rest of the offense, this team is just as close to the one everyone wrote off at the beginning of the year as they are to the one everyone was lauding when they were atop the AL East.
MLB Odds: Red Sox 4, Yankees 2
