ODDS ANALYSIS

The Red Sox continue their road trip in Texas after a three-game sweep of the Jays. Boston has now won six of their last seven games. They’re 26-14 in their last 40 games.

The offense has been booming lately, too. They scored 29 in the three-game set against the Jays. The offense was the question for this team until recently. They’re still looking for consistent power, but have found ways to put runs on the board.

On the Rangers’ side, they have plenty of power, but lack the consistent contact. They have three regular players with an average of .211 or lower. All three bring plenty of swing and miss, too. They’ve already combined for 273 Ks.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Without a doubt the best pitching matchup in the series, the Red Sox will turn David Price loose on the Rangers. In return, Texas will look to their ace, Yu Darvish.

It’s been a rough go for Price in the last year and a half in Boston. He’s had some run-ins with the fans and media, his numbers haven’t lived up to expectations and he’s fought win injuries.

Despite all of that, he’s still 20-11 in his 42 starts for Boston. That’s a pretty good winning-percentage.

This year, Price is just 3-2 with a 4.61 ERA and 1.268 WHIP in seven games. He’s tossed 41 innings. To date, his strikeouts are down and walks are up. Over his career, he’s got a 3.75 strikeout per walk ratio. This year, it’s down to 2.4.

Price is coming off his best start of the year, going seven strong, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven and walked none against the Twins. That was on the heels of another quality start. He’s made three quality starts in his last four, but has still given up three run in each of those starts.

Even in his good year, Price has had his issues with Texas. He’s 3-5 with a 5.52 ERA in 13 games.

As for Darvish, he’s 6-6 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.084 WHIP in 107 innings. In his career, he’s faced Boston three times, allowing nine runs in 22.1 innings while recording 35 strikeouts.

Darvish has recorded four quality starts in his last five games. Over his last two starts, he’s allowed two earned runs total in 13 innings, striking out 16.

LIVE BETTING

Third base remains a black hole for the Sox. Pablo Sandoval, Josh Rutledge and Deven Marrero have all been terrible at the dish and injuries haven’t helped either.

Almost as bad as the pitchers’ spot in an NL lineup, Darvish should be able to use that spot to better maneuver through this order.

While those bitters have struggled, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. have both been strong the last month, hitting .352 and .330 respectively, combining for nine homers and 32 RBIs with nine combined steals.

On the other side of the diamond, Carlos Gomez has shown tremendous power in his last 15 games, hitting six homers and driving in 16. He has struck out 30 times in those 55 at bats. That’s bad, but a .600 slugging percentage helps offset it.

On the down side, Joey Gallo and Mike Napoli just continue to be boom-or-bust. It’s hard to find consistent success in a lineup featuring two such hitters.

QUICK PICK

Darvish is the difference maker here. The Rangers are a mediocre team while the Sox have been playing much better ball.

Price, even with his best outing of the year last time out, will give up a few runs. If the Rangers’ bullpen can hold up and the bats can crank one or two out against Price, they should get the win.

Texas is 22-17 at home while the Sox are just barely over .500 on the road.

MLB Odds: Rangers 5, Red Sox 3
