The Padres haven’t won many ballgames lately and are trying desperately to stay out of the cellar in the National League. San Diego has had success against Colorado this season, though, winning twice in each of the earlier three-game series between the clubs.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Things have gone downhill fast for San Diego. Since a season-long three-game winning streak, which included a doubleheader sweep of the Cubs in Chicago in mid-May, the Padres are nearing rock bottom. If they aren’t there yet, they soon will be. San Diego dropped a fourth straight game Tuesday afternoon, getting crushed 16-4 in Seattle. It was the Pads’ 13th loss in 17 games. In that stretch are three four-game losing streaks and San Diego is down 7.37 units on the moneyline.
San Diego hasn’t experienced much success this season, but they have enjoyed playing Colorado. The Padres have won four of six meetings between the NL West rivals, taking two of three in each ballpark. The teams cashed the under twice when the teams played in San Diego from May 2-4
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Chris Rusin (1-3, 4.75 ERA) threw a respectable 63 percent of his pitches for strikes, but he was simply too hittable in Sunday’s loss to the Giants. He surrendered six runs on 11 hits and walked three over his five frames. San Francisco got to him early plating all six runs in the first four innings. It was a tough month of May for the lefty, who pitched to a 6.66 ERA while going 0-3 in five starts last month.
Rusin surrendered three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief against the Padres on Apr. 8. He’s 1-1 with a 4.12 ERA in four games, including three starts against the Padres and owns a 4.56 career ERA at Petco Park.
Drew Pomeranz (4-5, 2.48 ERA) couldn’t avoid the black cloud hanging over the Padres, turning in his worst outing of the season Sunday in a loss to the D-backs. He gave up a season-high six runs, five hits and four walks in five innings with nine strikeouts. His ERA, which had been second in the NL among qualifying pitchers, rose from 1.70 to 2.48.
Pomeranz has issued 10 walks in his last four starts and needs to command the strike zone better to maintain the success he’s enjoyed this year. He was the beneficiary of San Diego’s season-high 16 runs, giving up two runs and four hits in five innings to pick up a victory over the Rockies on Apr. 9.
LIVE BETTING
The Rockies entered 2016 without many expectations, but they knew they had a star in third baseman Nolan Arenado. He busted out last season with 42 homers and 130 RBIs while hitting .287 with an OPS of .898. And while Bryce Harper ran away with the NL MVP, Arenado put up better offensive numbers in many statistical categories besides batting average.
The offensive onslaught has continued this season. Arenado blasted a pair of home runs and drove in four during Tuesday’s 17-4 rout of Cincinnati and leads the senior circuit with 16 dingers and 43 ribbies. The argument will always be made for a Rockies player who puts up offensive numbers that he plays in the thin air of Denver. However, when looking at Arenado’s splits, the difference isn’t that alarming. Nine of his 16 homers have come at Coors Field, where he hits .306 with 26 RBIs. He’s clubbed five career homers at Petco Park, the second-most in any visiting park.
QUICK PICK
Don’t look now but the Braves and Reds are in hot pursuit of San Diego to escape the NL basement. A recent cold spell has the Padres slipping further in the standings and there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight. For a while the pitching was solid and made up for a lack of run production. But with the staff struggling, the losses are piling up. There is some hope with their ace Pomeranz on the hill and a bounce back effort is sorely needed. Rusin hasn’t been the answer since moving into the starting rotation and the Padres actually have a chance facing him.
