ODDS ANALYSIS
With the Giants and Dodgers within the division, the Rockies are never going to truly compete for the NL West pennant until it puts a formidable starting pitching rotation that can figure out how to be semi-decent consistently within Coors Field. That’s just the unfortunate hand the baseball gods handed the franchise with it playing half of its games in the thin air of Mile High. Still, the Rox have shored up the first leg of the pitching dilemma with the rotation churning out the fourteenth most quality starts in the league. It’s a start, and pitching in San Francisco at night will only aid them in this spot. Colorado’s up $547 when in the visitor’s role.
The even year BS is at a fever pitch right now with the Giants the hottest team in the month of June and now just two games in back of the Cubs for the best record in the National League. Bruce Bochy’s troops are currently lined at +550 to win the World Series and -900 chalk to win the NL West. Currently 18 games over .500, the $1269 reeled in in playing .612 ball finds them the third most lucrative bet in the league heading into Thursday’s series finale with the A’s. That said, the offense needs to pick up the pace as it’s been the pitching both from the starters and the pen that’s gotten the team out to a great first half.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
It hasn’t been pretty for Eddie Butler regardless of where he’s pitched this season. At home, he’s 1-2 with a ridiculous 9.85 ERA and 2.03 WHIP. While he’s been better on the road compared to when in Coors, he’s still 1-3 as a visitor with a 4.55 ERA and more manageable 1.21 WHIP. Regardless, the opposition is hitting him to the tune of a bloated .320 batting average against in his nine overall starts. He’s given up a grand total of 16 ERs and 5 home runs in his last three starts, but did toss six innings of shutout ball at the Giants when he last took the bump at AT&T back on May 8.
Ageless wonder Jake Peavy continues to have a job in this league even though his stuff hardly dictates as such. But with the Giants trotting Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija to the bump at the top of the rotation, I guess they feel they can take a mulligan every fifth day with Peavy. The veteran is 4-7 on the year with a 5.33 ERA and 63:26 K/BB ratio. His overall numbers would be even worse if he didn’t get the benefit of facing the Braves, Padres, Rays, Phillies and A’s recently. Still, San Fran has won five of his eight home starts where his ERA is his best at 4.36.
LIVE BETTING
No way no how Butler stymies the Giants offense in their own ballpark once again. No way no how Peavy matches wits with this potent Rockies offense and lives to tell about it.
With that the case, I’ll be all over the first five innings over the total and demand that you be a part of it as well! Everyone should take in some fireworks on this day, and both of these starting pitchers will get lit like the fuses they are.
QUICK PICK
This match-up sets up to be a DFS player’s wet dream! The offenses hold extreme advantages over both starting pitchers, and that will be discovered by those not in the know almost immediately. Nolan Arenado is going to be a very popular cash game player, and he’s one prop bettors should take a look at with him batting .500 against Peavy in 14 career at-bats with five extra base hits and 7 RBI.
The over is 5-3 in Peavy’s eight AT&T starts and it’s 7-4 when he’s toes the bump at night. As for Butler, the over is 8-4 in his 12 appearances and 6-3 in his made starts under the lights. These teams have played to high scorers seven of the last 10 times they hooked up by the bay, and I fully expect that trend to extend after this pitching matchup plays out.
