Carlos Correa and the streaking Astros will attempt to start another winning streak on ESPN’s Monday Night Baseball telecast when it invades Anaheim looking to pile some more dirt on Mike Scioscia and the dead in the water Angels.

ODDS ANALYSIS
Though it just had its seven game winning streak snapped on Sunday in Kansas City, the Astros are still feeling pretty good about themselves after taking two of three from the defending champs at Kauffman Stadium. Their goal to get back to .500 and then surpass it has been achieved, but now they have bigger fish to fry as they look to chew off more of their deficit in the AL West as well as in the AL wild card standings.
As it is, Houston checks in as 10-1 underdogs to win the American League pennant and 25-1 underdogs to win the World Series. The more confidence A.J. Hinch’s squad gets, the more deadly they become. A flyer on this team right now is a solid investment just in case.
As for the Angels, there’s really not much to get excited about. The pitching staff and offense ranks amongst the worst in the league. On top of that, only the Rays and Twins have cost MLB bettors more money this season. Almost halfway through the regular season, the Halos have cost their wagering supporters nearly $1350 with close to $1K of it coming at home where they currently sit seven games under .500 after dropping three of four to the division rival A’s over the weekend.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
One of the Halos lone bright spots will be talking the bump on Monday night in the form of Matt Shoemaker. The righty is in the midst of a major bounce back campaign after burning his supporters and fantasy baseball team owners last season. He’s the team leader in ERA (4.43) and WHIP (1.28), and while neither of those stats are overall impressive, he’s been flat out unhittable of late in allowing just 17 hits and 4 ER with a 25:4 K/BB ratio over his last three starts (21.1 IP).
He’s 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA and .263 batting average against lifetime against Houston.
Opposing Shoemaker will by Colin McHugh, who like Matt a year ago, is really letting his fantasy baseball teams and wagering supporters down in a big way this season. He’s conceded 100 hits in just 84.1 total innings of work, and has been at his worst on the road where his ERA balloons to 5.02. Houston’s 9-6 in his 15 overall starts with the under cashing in eight of them.
McHugh’s been pretty darn good against the Angels lifetime in going 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA and .213 BAA over eight career starts.
LIVE BETTING
Though Albert Pujols continues to move up the all-time home run list with every passing game, he’s been pretty yawnstipating this season – as well as for his career as a member of the Angels. Over his last 60 at-bats, the righty slugger has amassed 12 hits with only three of them going for extra bases.
However, he’s very much so enjoyed stepping into the box to battle McHugh with him 6-for-17 lifetime with a home run, 3 RBI and a trio of walks. He hit a couple dongs over the weekend and might just be getting hot. This looks to be as good a spot as any to take a flyer on his home run prop.
QUICK PICK
With every game that goes in the record book, the Astros just seem to be getting it. They look more like the team that shocked the baseball world a year ago by qualifying for the playoffs than the one that looked to have no shot of surpassing its season win total only a month ago.
Since dropping the first meeting of the season, Houston has rattled off five straight wins against the Halos. They’re 10-5 in the last 15 overall meetings as well as 3-1 in their last four visits to the Big A. Houston’s won four straight series and I expect it to take the first step in securing that fifth this evening.
MLB Odds: Astros 5, Angels 3
