A pair of last place teams in their respective divisions will close out an extended series in the Trop where the Rays will look to hold serve against Mike Trout and the Angels.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Combined, these teams sit 29 games under .500 after the Halos evened the series up on Tuesday night as +165 underdogs taking the Rays out 13-5 behind a huge night from C.J. Cron.

The win moved manager Mike Scioscia’s squad to 18-24 on the road where they’ve cost their betting backer’s over $320 for the season. The team’s played just .405 ball overall (-$1657) which has many thinking a changing of the guard will occur in the offseason if not earlier. As it is, it would be quite the shock to see the Halos reverse their fortune with them lined at 150-1 to win the AL West and 200-1 to win the World Series.

The story hardly gets better in Tampa Bay where a third straight losing season looks to be in the cards with Kevin Cash’s troops 15 games under the break-even point as we head into the All-Star break. After dropping the second game of this series, the Rays sit eight games under .500 at home (-$1313) where they’ve managed to pull out just one win in their last six tries. They’re also 200-1 to win it all as well as 150-1 to win the AL East.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

After allowing just 156 hits in over 180 innings pitched last season, it seemed as if Hector Santiago made the jump to being at the very least a No. 3 in the Halos’ starting rotation. While he’s 5-4 to date and owns a .241 batting average against, he just hasn’t been quite up to snuff. He allows better than eight hits per start, and has been prone to getting blown up all season long. On top of that, he’s been just a six inning pitcher with only one of his last 10 starts reaching the seventh. In three appearances against the Rays, the lefty owns a 8.38 ERA and .364 BAA.

Rookies are tough to gauge in their first go round at this level. You really never know what you’re going to get. In the case of Blake Snell, he’s kind of given up a great idea of what to expect through his five starts. He has the stuff to limit the damage, but boy does he love to test the waters evidenced by his 1.71 WHIP and 5.4 walks issued per nine innings pitched. Since being recalled in mid-June, the lefty has conceded no less than three walks while never registering more than 4 Ks. Those types of splits will get you killed at this level, but so far, Snell has avoided catastrophe.

LIVE BETTING

Tampa Bay has been a train wreck since the middle of last month in dropping 17 of their last 20 overall games played. That includes coming out on the wrong end of the scoreboard in six of the last nine played in front of the hometown faithful. Over the last seven days, Tampa Bay has plated an average of just 3.1 runs per game.

However, Evan Longoria and his mates love stepping into the box to face southpaws with them 11-9 against them overall while pushing across an average of 5.6 runs per game. On the flipside, LA has won just nine of the 24 times it took hacks against a lefty starter and scored just 3.5 runs per game in those contests.

QUICK PICK

One of these days, the switch is going to flip for Snell. He’s got all the talent in the world, but has had trouble harnessing it. This looks to be as good a spot as any for the youngster to shine in an early getaway day spot against an Angels team clamoring for the ASB to arrive so they can take a few days off away from this wretched season.
