ODDS ANALYSIS
The Cubs and Dodgers find themselves on completely different ends of the spectrum from a wagering perspective heading into the opener of this series on Monday night.
Los Angeles might be a winning ball club at three-games over .500, but it’s done a terrible job hooking its wagering supporters up in costing them nearly $500 overall for the season. It has however won 14 of 26 on the road to produce a $39 profit.
Chicago on the other hand checks in as the second best bet in all of baseball after just sweeping the league’s No. 5 moneymaker – the Philadelphia Phillies – at home over the weekend. Though Joe Maddon’s squad currently sits 20 games over .500, it’s only made its betting backers just over a grand which shows just how much you have to pay to play the Cubbies in 2016.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Scott Kazmir gets the unlucky call to the bump to oppose Arrieta in this one, but for live betting purposes, we’re going to focus on the bullpens for both teams in this matchup.
Los Angeles is the owner of the league’s No. 11 ranked bullpen that’s pitched to a 3.54 ERA and limited the opposition to a .203 batting average against. With 19-year old phenom Julio Urias likely to do most of his work since being called up out of the pen, it only makes this unit all the more deadly with Kenley Jansen lurking for the late innings. The veteran has only blown two saves to date, and has allowed only 10 hits and 3 ER while striking out 21 and issuing one free pass.
Chicago owns the No. 1 ranked pitching staff in all of baseball, and the bullpen has played a large role in that it’s held opposing offenses to a .200 batting average against and blown just three saves in a grand total of 12 save opportunities. The Cubs offense has prevented Hector Rondon from getting more saves. Still, the Cubs better long men have sub 4.00 ERA’s, while bridge builder Pedro Strop has allowed just 11 hits and 6 ER through 19 innings. Rondon has racked up 26 Ks through 16.1 innings of work, and has converted all eight of his save opportunities.
LIVE BETTING SCENARIO
Jake Arrieta is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA and .131 BAA through three career starts against the Dodgers. While LA hasn’t hit him much having raked just eight hits across 18 innings, it’s been scary patient in taking 11 walks. That’s been the key to their unusual success versus the man that’s put Chuck Norris on notice.
The offense is going to have to really step up to the plate in this one with Chicago excelling against left-handed pitching all season in going 9-3 while plating an average of 5.8 runs per game. On top of that, Scott Kazmir is known to lose his control in the blink of an eye, and there isn’t a team in the bigs taking more walks than that of the Cubs who’ve done so 230 times heading into Monday’s opener; that’s an average of 4.8 per game peeps!
Arrieta’s issued two or less walks in each of his last three starts while racking up 23 Ks during that stretch. Kazmir has issued 10 free passes over his last three starts and is yet to put forth a quality start on the road this season since doing so in his first outing of the year at Petco back on April 5.
With runs likely tough to come by as good as both pitching staffs have been, make it a point to gauge which side is giving up walks and look to take positions against that team when live betting this one.
