The Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Memorial Day as the Cards’ struggles at home continue. The win, bumped the Dodgers to just a game under-.500 on the road while notching their fifth straight victory. The Dodgers are trending the right direction while the Cardinals are backtracking.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The series opener, Chase Utley, Logan Forsythe and Cody Bellinger all went yard while Rich Hill pitched five solid and turned it over to the bullpen that slammed the door, pitching four scoreless, innings with just three hits allowed, no walks.

On the other side of the field, Kevin Siegrist allowed another run, albeit meaningless, but Siegrist was nails last year, but hasn’t provided the same production in the first two months of 2017.

The Cardinals’ offense managed just five hits and one run. Dexter Fowler went 0-for-4 atop the order while the whole top five spots in the order combined to go 2-for-17, both singles. Tommy Pham, hitting second, did score the lone run.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Just a start removed from a nine-inning shutout against San Francisco, Carlos Martinez will make his third consecutive start against a NL West foe.

Martinez followed up his dominating win over the Giants with another strong showing against the Rockies at Coors Field. He did give up three runs in the game, but tossed seven and a third. Combining those two starts, Martinez has pitched 16.1 innings, allowing only those three runs, walking three and striking out 16.

The 25-year old right-hander is 3-4 this year with a 3.32 ERA and 1.138 WHIP in 65 innings pitched. He’s allowed three runs or less in each of his last six games.

In his brief career, the Cardinals ace has faced the Dodgers seven times, making six starts. He’s 2-2 in those games, pitching to a 3.55 ERA in 33 innings. He struck out 34, but did walk 18.

Walks can get out of hand for Martinez who walked eight Yankees in a game earlier this year. He’s walked just three in his last two games and 10 in his last five.

The Dodgers haven’t made the announcement, but it looks like Hyun-Jin Ryu gets the start for the Los Angeles in place of the injured Alex Wood.

That’s a break for the Cards as Wood has been lights out this year. He’s 6-0 with a 1.69 ERA. Ryu, meanwhile, is 2-5 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.500 WHIP.

Ryu has started seven games and made one relief appearance. He came in after Kenta Maeda on Thursday against the Cardinals and pitched four shutout innings, getting the save. He allowed two hits and a walk to close out the game.

LIVE BETTING

Washington, Colorado and Arizona are the top three scoring teams in baseball, but in the month of May, the Dodgers have squeezed into those rankings, scoring the second most runs in the sports, just behind the Rockies.

Los Angeles doesn’t have the same home field advantage as the Rockies do when it comes to offensive output, but they’ve scored just four fewer runs in May and have an OPS of .796, better the Rockies.

Compared to the Cardinals, these two teams are miles apart offensively. Only three NL teams have scored fewer runs than St. Louis in the month of May.

The Dodgers have several great young players while the Cardinals have some good role players and good hitters, but don’t have the big thump in the middle. Jedd Gyorko and Matt Carpenter are about as close as they get to that guy.

QUICK PICK

Carlos Martinez does give the Cardinals the advantage even though they’ve struggled at home. It’s not like the Dodgers have dominated on the road either.

Look for Martinez to give the Cardinals seven strong innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. The Cards’ pen has been a bit vulnerable at times, but they have enough to get through a couple innings.

Ryu’s performance out of the pen in his last appearance was admirable, but he’s not yet shown that sort of strength against a team that’s able to game plan for him from the beginning.

MLB Odds: Cardinals 6, Dodgers 4
