ODDS ANALYSIS
When you go around the horn and compare these teams position by position, the Marlins stack up pretty well with the Mets.
While the Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes may inch out Marcell Ozuna in left, the combination of Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton help flip the script when we look at the outfield overall against the likes of Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce.
The Marlins are also the stronger defensive team up the middle with J.T. Realmuto, Adeiny Hechavarria, Dee Gordon and Yelich.
Really, based on that, you’d think the Marlins were the better team, but pitching makes a big difference and that’s where Miami falls short. It’s especially evident when you consider the No. 1 starters for these two teams, both of whom are getting the assignment on Sunday night.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Noah Syndergaard gets pushed back to Sunday after a blister began to form on his middle finger during his Opening Day start on Monday against the Braves.
The 24-year old right-hander was absolutely filthy in his six innings against Atlanta, holding them to just five hits while striking out seven and allowing no walks. If not for the blister, Thor could have gone deeper into the game having tossed just 86 pitches when he exited.
Syndergaard has been nasty ever since he got called up in 2015. He’s a career 23-16 pitcher with a 2.89 ERA and 1.103 WHIP.
Only three of his 55 starts to date have come against the Marlins, but he’s owned Miami each time he’s faced them, going 2-0, giving up just four runs and 18 hits in 20 innings of work while striking out 29.
Opposing Syndergaard will be the Marlins’ Opening Day starter: Edinson Volquez.
While Volquez struggled through the 2016 season, the veteran right-hander had a nice debut for the Fish on Monday, throwing five shutout innings against the Nationals. He even collected a pair of hits in the contest.
Last year, Volquez pitched to an inflated 5.37 ERA after previously posting back-to-back seasons of low-to-mid three ERAs. The 33-year old has been inconsistent his whole career and has shown that his stuff can be dominant, but his command can abandon him as well.
As a result, Syndergaard is the better bet to deliver on Sunday even with the blister issues, but on any given day, Volquez can deliver a strong outing.
He did just that the last time he faced the Mets, tossing six scoreless for the Royals in a World Series rematch to open the 2016 season. Nevertheless, his career numbers against New York aren’t that good as he’s 3-5 with a 4.99 ERA and 1.705 WHIP in 10 starts.
LIVE BETTING
The bullpen is what hurt the Marlins in their opener. Volquez pitched well, but the pen allowed the Nationals to come back and get the win.
Over the winter, it was the relief core that the team really focused on improving and we saw two of the new additions on Monday in Brad Ziegler and Junichi Tazawa. Ziegler did his job pitching a clean inning, but Tazawa faced three batters and failed to record an out, walking two and allowing a hit and a run.
David Phelps also pitched in relief in that game and he gave up a pair of home runs to Adam Lind and Bryce Harper.
The opening day blunder aside, the Marlins bullpen should be better than the Mets as they have a collection of talented arms including the once mentioned as well as A.J. Ramos and Kyle Barraclough. New York, meanwhile, is dealing with the loss of Jeurys Familia who is serving a 15-game suspension.
QUICK PICK
The Fish actually have the better team in terms of positional talent, but New York is the better team overall due to the pitching and the hurler at the top of that list is Syndergaard.
Look for Thor to have another dominating performance while the inconsistency of Volquez plagues the Marlins as he follows up his great outing against Washington with a lackluster one in the Big Apple.
In the end, the Mets have enough offense to get the win and Addison Reed is able to close the door in Familia’s absence.
MLB Odds: Mets 6, Marlins 3
