MLB Odds - Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets Series Preview

Brewers-at-Mets-Series-Preview-bm

The Mets have been racked by injuries this season and could already be out of the playoff hunt unless they turn it around quickly. This would be a big series for them to claim against a team that is playing well on the road this year.

This series will be contested from Monday, May 29 through Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Citi Field in Queens, New York.

Pitching Matchups

The Brewers will send out Matt Garza to the mound on Monday. He is 2-1 on the season with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He has struck out 27 batters and walked only six in six starts this season. The Mets will counter with Robert Gsellman, who is 2-3 with a 6.45 ERA. He has struggled badly as a starter but needs to be in the rotation because of various injuries.

Milwaukee’s Tuesday starter is scheduled to be Zach Davies. He is 5-3 with a 5.33 ERA on the season. Davies had four poor starts to begin the season but has been better of late. The Mets have not yet scheduled a starter for this matchup.

In the series finale, the Brewers will lean on starter Junior Guerra. He is 0-0 with a 3.12 ERA. Guerra started for the first time this season on May 26, allowing just one run in 5.2 innings against the Diamondbacks. The Mets should feel good about this matchup as they send out Jacob DeGrom. He is 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA and has 86 strikeouts in only 64 innings pitched. He has only allowed one earned run in his past two starts.

Road Warriors

The Brewers will aim to stay hot on the road. While they are one game under .500 at home on the season, Milwaukee has gone 13-8 on the road. They have won five of their past seven games in enemy ballparks, capturing the series finale against the Pirates, winning three of four in San Diego and splitting a pair of games against the Cubs.

The Mets have struggled at home this season with a record of 11-15. They really struggled during a long homestand in late April but have improved lately. The Mets have won seven of their past 12 games at home and need to continue down that road in order to get into the wild card chase.

Injury Report

The Mets get to send DeGrom to the hill in this series, but they are missing some other key starters. Noah Syndergaard is on the shelf for several weeks, if not months, and will really be missed. He is 1-2 on the season with a 3.29 ERA with 32 strikeouts and only two walks. Steven Matz hasn’t pitched this season and is another key component missing.

Those two usually team with Matt Harvey, DeGrom and Zack Wheeler for arguably the finest starting rotation in baseball, but between struggles and injuries, the group has not lived up to its billing. If the Mets can somehow find a way into the postseason, it has the type of starting pitching to hang with anyone.

However, the group has struggled early on as the lineup is not hitting really well and the star hurlers are injured. Time is running out for the Mets to turn it around, and they really need to win this series to get closer to .500 on the season. That’s the first goal, and if it doesn’t happen soon, they could be sellers at the trading deadline.
