The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to push the Rockies and Diamondbacks in the NL West. Having won nine of their last 10 games, L.A. is rolling. They will face off against the New York Mets in the third game of a four-game series on Wednesday. The Mets have been playing better of late, but they’re still rather unpredictable and sit several games under-.500.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Power is the name of the game for the Mets’ bats. The Metropolitans are second in New York and second in the Majors in home runs during the month of June, slamming 32 of them in 17 games.

The Dodgers, by comparison, have hit 10 fewer homers in the month, but have scored two more runs in fewer games.

Los Angeles is better at manufacturing runs, but if Hill is not locating and his curve flattens out, it could give New York plenty of chances to go yard.

On the down side, the Mets are without both of their middle infielders, though the power of Micheal Conforto, Lucas Duda, Jay Bruce and Yoenis Cespedes will be what this offense lives and dies by.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

For Rich Hill, it’s all about the curveball. That’s his primary pitch. The veteran southpaw throws his fastball off that rather than the other way around.

It has been a successful strategy for Hill over the last year, but he’s been struggling with his command of the pitch lately. If he cannot locate the curve, he will struggle.

In his last start, Hill allowed seven runs in four innings against the Indians.

Overall, he’s 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in his eight starts this year. Before his last start, he did have three straight games with two or fewer earned runs.

Even when going well, Hill doesn’t go deep in the game. His last start was the first time that he threw more than 100-pitches. Regardless of how well he’s throwing, the Dodgers’ bullpen will play a crucial role in this game.

The Mets have yet to announce their starter for this nationally televised game. New York will be keeping their rotation at six for at least another round. That means a likely start for Tyler Pill or Rafael Montero. Both have made two starts at the big league level this year. Montero seems to have the inside track at the start unless he’s needed out of the bullpen before then.

Pill is 0-2 in his four games—including the two starts. He’s thrown 12 innings, giving up 15 hits and seven runs though just five of them are earned. In his two starts, he’s pitched 10.1 innings. The Mets are 1-1 in those starts.

As for Montero, he’s seen more games at the big-league level, getting 12 games in relief in addition to his two starts. The overall numbers, however, have been bad.

The 26-year old former prospect is 0-4 with a 7.15 ERA and 2.206 WHIP. He’s allowed 33 hits and 17 walks in 22.2 innings. In the 14 games, Montero has appeared, the Mets are 2-12.

Despite all of that, there is some hope. Montero’s last outing was three perfect innings in relief against a good hitting Nationals’ team.

LIVE BETTING

Historically, the Mets have owned Hill. He’s 0-2, giving up 12 runs in eight innings against New York.

Some of those numbers come from ancient history. Hill leans on his curve much more now than in the past. When we look at the individual Mets’ careers against Hill, Jose Reyes is 3-for-6. The rest of the active players on the roster have a combined four at bats against Hill and no hits.

Provided Montero gets the start for the Mets, it will be interesting to see if there is any carry over to his three-perfect innings in his last appearance.

If not, it could be a long night for the youngster. The Dodgers young sluggers at the heart of the order are swinging well right now. Cody Bellinger has four homeruns over the last week and the ever-streaky Yasiel Puig is seeing the ball well right now, too.

QUICK PICK

Hill’s struggles are concerning, but the Dodgers have a more complete offense and with Montero the likely starter for the Mets, they’ll have an ideal pitcher to tee-off on.

Look for both bullpens to be heavily involved in this game. Montero has shuffled from the rotation to the pen and will be on a pitch count assuming he pitches well enough to get to it. Hill, meanwhile, isn’t prone to go deep in games either.

Obviously, that pushes this one further in Los Angeles’ favor. The Dodgers have the best bullpen in the NL, boasting a 3.11 ERA, the Mets’ pen has an ERA of 4.81.

The spread should heavily favor the Dodgers again at home. Given all the variables, go with the favorite and back the Dodgers for an easy win in a likely high-scoring affair.

MLB Odds: Dodgers 9, Mets 5
