MLB Odds - New York Mets at Miami Marlins Game Preview

Mets-at-Marlins-BET1

The Mets need some offense to complement their stable of young hurlers. With Noah Syndergaard on the bump, they likely won’t need much. Thor is looking to last a little longer than his previous start, when he was tossed after 2.1 innings for throwing behind New York’s public enemy No. 1 Chase Utley.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Now that the Phillies have come back down to earth after a hot start, it’s the Marlins chasing down the Mets for second place in the NL East as they all try to catch the Washington Nationals. Miami can make things a bit more interesting in the division by closing the gap on the Metropolitans in a three-game weekend set.

Both teams have been treading water over the last few games. The Mets blew a late lead and lost for the third time in four games falling 6-4 to the White Sox on Tuesday. The Marlins beat Pittsburgh Tuesday night for their second win in five games with two of those losses coming against the majors’ worst team in Atlanta. Miami ventured into Queens in early April and took two of three from the Mets, outscoring them 13-6. Each team took a 2-1 win with Miami getting the decider by a 10-3 count.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Noah Syndergaard (5-2, 1.84 ERA) is in line to make the start despite throwing one inning of relief on Tuesday against the White Sox. He was available after getting tossed for throwing behind Chase Utley in his previous start following only 34 pitches. It was Thor’s usual day to throw on the side so manager Terry Collins decided to put him in. Syndergaard threw 17 pitches, 14 for strikes with nine of those pitches clocking in at 100 mph or more.

Syndergaard has not allowed a run while striking out 26 in his last four appearances covering 17.1 innings. He gave up one run and seven hits with 12 strikeouts over seven innings in an earlier start against Miami, but was saddled with a no-decision in a game the Marlins won 2-1.

Tom Koehler (3-5, 4.50 ERA) struggled with his control again, but came away with a victory by holding the Braves to three runs and three hits over seven innings on Sunday. He issued five walks for the fourth consecutive game, elevating his pitch count and leading to his removal after failing to retire a batter in the eighth inning.

Koehler lowered his ERA to 4.50, but his 20:16 walk/strikeout ratio over the last four starts is concerning. He’s appeared in and started more games against the Mets than any team and is 2-5 with a 4.14 ERA over 87.0 lifetime innings.

LIVE BETTING

Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna got a wake-up call when he was sent back down to the minors last season. Apparently he got the message. No longer taking anything for granted, Ozuna is one of the toughest outs in the National League this season.

Ozuna hit his 10th home run in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Braves and finished with two hits, an intentional walk and three runs scored. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games in which he’s batting .488. Ozuna also extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 36. His .434 batting average in May raised his season number to .333 and his 46 hits during the month were the third-most by a Marlins player in any month.

QUICK PICK

New York’s offense continues to struggle and it could very well cost them a chance at repeating as division champs. Of course, we were talking about the same thing last year before the Metropolitans turned it on in the second half and ran away with the division. But there are concerns. David Wright is dealing with neck and back problems that could cost him some time on the disabled list, and first baseman Lucas Duda is already there. The Mets could get to Koehler in this one and Syndergaard has been dominant all season. It’s hard to picture the Marlins doing enough offensively against Thor, especially with Giancarlo Stanton nursing sore ribs.

MLB Odds: New York 4, Miami 1
