MLB Odds - New York Yankees at Baltimore Orioles Game Preview

The Yankees will be a weary group when they get to Baltimore on the last leg of road trip that turned more grueling with a makeup game in Detroit on Thursday. It was supposed to be a day off for New York, instead their trip is extended by another city and another game.

ODDS ANALYSIS

After tangling with the first-place Red Sox, Baltimore will entertain another AL East rival in the Yankees over the weekend as the Orioles continue their 10-game homestand. The O’s temporarily stopped the bleeding with a 13-9 win over the Sox on Wednesday, putting an end to 2-7 slide that saw them drop out of first in the division. Baltimore was down 5.47 units during its skid, which included a pair of home losses to Boston to open the homestand.

The O’s have been strong at Camden Yards, winning the second-most home games in the AL while playing to an 18-10 record. They are up 6.26 units overall. Though they were outscored 8-5, the Orioles won two of three games from New York when the teams met in Baltimore in early May. The under cashed in all three meetings.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Ivan Nova (3-3, 3.98 ERA) had solid control but was punished for his mistakes in the zone as he surrendered four doubles and a home run among eight hits in Monday’s loss to the Blue Jays. Nova was touched for four runs while issuing a walk and four strikeouts. He’s now allowed six home runs in his five starts, continuing a career-long problem.

Nova is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in five starts since replacing Luis Severino in the Yankees’ rotation and his control has been elite with just six walks in 43 innings. But it won’t matter if the strikes he throws continue to be hittable.

Despite some early struggles, Tyler Wilson (2-4, 3.83 ERA) was able to settle in and go 6.2 innings in Monday’s loss to the Red Sox. He gave up three runs on eight hits and surrendered a home run for the fourth consecutive outing. It was a solid performance but Jackie Bradley Jr.’s big fly in the sixth did him in.

Wilson has done a respectable job this season with a 3.83 ERA over seven starts and three relief appearances. But it’s hard to be optimistic about him with his inability to miss bats. He has just 26 strikeouts in 49.1 innings. His first career start against the Yankees was on May 4 when he held them scoreless through five innings before collapsing in the sixth and taking the loss in 7-0 defeat.

LIVE BETTING

Throughout his big league career Nova has been hurt by the long ball. In 674.2 lifetime innings, the big right-hander has surrendered 79 home runs for an average of just over one for every nine innings pitched. And the team that’s gotten to him the most is the Orioles, who have slugged 14 homers off him in 94 innings.

Two men on the O’s roster are responsible for half those long balls. Chris Davis has three homers among his nine hits in 29 career at-bats against Nova while Matt Wieters has four homers and 12 hits in 35 at-bats against the Yankees starter. Mark Trumbo, who is second the American League with 15 homers, has hit two in 16 lifetime at-bats with a .563 average off Nova.

QUICK PICK

If the Orioles could get some decent pitching they might run away with the AL East. They haven’t. And they aren’t. Baltimore can score, there’s no question about that. They rank in the top 10 in the majors in runs per game, batting average, home runs and OPS. Pitching has been the issue for the Birds. During a recent nine-game stretch where they were 2-7, the staff gave up nearly six runs per game and allowed fewer than four just once.

Baltimore will score against Nova. The question is will they score enough? Wilson was good when he faced New York earlier in the season and the pen imploded in a 7-0 loss. The Yankees have returned to their inept ways after a flash of good ball got everyone excited. Watch for the O’s to do some damage with the long ball and get a victory.
