The Yankees are happy to see the calendar change after suffering through their fist losing April since 2008. The month of May doesn’t look much better with Boston’s David Price ready to attack a slumping New York lineup.

ODDS ANALYSIS

It’s official. This April will go down as a bad one for the Yankees. Blame the hitting more than anything for the Yankees’ first losing April since 2008, which became a certainty with Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Rangers. New York scored just six runs in losing the three-game series in Texas after taking the opener behind Nathan Eovaldi. This made it 10 out of 20 games in which the Yanks have been held to two or fewer runs, 15 of 20 in which they haven’t scored at least four.

Following a 4-1 road trip against struggling Houston and Atlanta, Boston began a span loaded with home games with a 9-4 drubbing of those same hapless Braves on Wednesday. Boston plays 18 of 27 games at Fenway Park against teams that were a combined 25 games under .500 through Wednesday. It’s tempting to wonder where this team could be after this favorable stretch of contests.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 4.38 ERA) hopes to build on a fine performance in Texas. He flirted with a no-hitter and ultimately tossed seven shutout innings in Monday’s 3-1 win over the Rangers. Eovaldi issued a walk and had a runner reach on an error before giving up a leadoff single in the seventh. He wound up allowing two hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

It was a masterful performance considering the Rangers’ big left-handed bats. He used a formidable mix of pitches to go along with his high-90s fastball. Eovaldi has won both his career starts at Fenway Park with a 3.86 ERA over 11.2 innings.

Coming off his finest performance in a Red Sox uniform, David Price (3-0, 5.76 ERA) gets his first taste of this bitter rivalry. Price allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 14 in a win over the Braves on Tuesday. He took full advantage of the matchup against the hapless Braves, matching his career-high in punchouts.

It was an outstanding bounce back effort for Price, who was clobbered for eight runs over 3.2 innings against the Rays in his previous outing. It was an interesting first month of the season for Price, who is 3-0 with 46 strikeouts in 29.2 innings, but carries a lofty 5.76 ERA into this start.

LIVE BETTING

The Red Sox scored two runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s 9-4 victory over Atlanta, marking the sixth time in their last seven games that they’ve scored in the opening frame. In fact, in five of those games, the Red Sox scored multiple runs in the first.

For the season Boston has scored twice the number of runs their opponents have, owning a 28-14 first-inning run differential. What makes this particularly odd is that the Red Sox did not score a first-inning run in any of their first five games.

QUICK PICK

The Yankees have had their struggles against left-handed pitching at the start of the year. Actually, they’ve struggled against all kinds of pitching. And things aren’t getting any easier Sunday as they attempt to snap out of their season-long funk. They face one of the best lefties in the game in Price, who is coming off a brilliant performance in Atlanta and finally had a game the Red Sox envisioned when they shelled out all that cash.

New York will need another strong effort from Eovaldi, who tossed seven shutout innings at the Rangers last time out. His inconsistency throughout his career doesn’t lead us to believe he can do that again.

MLB Odds: Boston 5, New York 3
