Early season weather problems finally caught up with the Yankees and Tigers, who will make-up a postponed game from April on Thursday night on what was originally a scheduled day off. Following a series in Toronto, New York will have an extended layover in Detroit before moving on to Baltimore.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Both teams will skip a scheduled off day to make up a game that was postponed earlier in the season. This turns a three-city, nine-game road trip into a four-city, 10-game trip for the Yankees, who will travel to Detroit following a series in Toronto. The Yanks are back on a plane for a quick turnaround before starting a three-game series in Baltimore on Friday.

After reaching the break-even point for the first time since the second week of the season with a 6-0 win over the Blue Jays on May 24, the Yankees lost four of their next six games and continue to flounder in the AL East. The Tigers are experiencing the same. Detroit climbed a game over .500 with a 3-1 win over Philadelphia on May 24 and proceeded to lose four of its next five games. Both teams are apparently allergic to playing winning baseball.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Michael Pineda (2-6, 6.92 ERA) had a continuation of his rough season on Saturday in a 9-5 loss to Tampa Bay. He allowed six runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings in what ranks as one of the more dismal outings among a bunch of them. While that certainly warrants removal from the rotation, Pineda has a track record of success and the Yanks aren’t quite ready to give up on him.

At some point, though, the big right-hander will have to start pitching better. Pineda has lost six of his 10 starts and he’s giving up too much contact with opponents batting .322 against him. He’s made two career starts at Comerica Park giving up 12 hits in 11.1 innings with a 5.56 ERA.

It appears as though Matt Boyd (0-0, 2.79 ERA) will get the nod in this one. The young lefty started his first game of the year last week in Oakland, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings. He took a no-decision in a game the Tigers lost 12-3. He fanned seven without walking a batter but was done in by a pair of home runs.

Boyd was outstanding at Triple-A Toledo this season, posting a 2.06 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 48 innings. He tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief against Cleveland in his only other appearance this year back on Apr. 24.

LIVE BETTING

There are rumblings from Yankees camp that Pineda could be pitching for his spot in the rotation. Given how awful he’s been, it isn’t surprising to hear. The Yanks have been patient with Pineda as he attempts to work through his issues, but that patience may be coming to an end. After his most recent implosion, pitching coach Larry Rothschild admitted that there is the possibility Pineda could be removed from the rotation.

In a way it makes sense given the season-long struggles of the veteran right-hander. But right now, unless the Yankees are looking to acquire another pitcher, there just doesn’t seem to be any answers currently on the roster. Pineda, Rothschild and manager Joe Girardi are all in agreement that he is not injured leading them to believe his troubles may be mechanical in nature. And that’s something that can be worked on. But at some point Pineda needs to produce or he’ll be working on his problems from the bullpen.

QUICK PICK

This turns into a grueling one-game road trip for the Yankees between stops in Toronto and Baltimore. Their travel day turns into a very long stopover in Detroit to play a makeup game from a rain out back in April. It’s also a travel day for the Tigers, who return to the Motor City from a stop on the West Coast. However, the Tigers were coming home anyway and will simply open their homestand a day early. That gives the Tigers an advantage but the cross-country flight will likely take something out of them. Facing a struggling Pineda should make them feel much better.
