ODDS ANALYSIS

The Mets and Yankees split their four game season series last year, but these are two different teams in 2017.

The Mets have had a disappointing season. They are at home for this game which should be an advantage, but New York’s record is better on the road than at home.

Coming into the head-to-head series, the Mets have won three of four from the Phillies while the Yankees dropped two of three form the Red Sox.

The Yankees have struggled at the plate from time-to-time lately and when the offense does click, the pitching has disappeared. Still, the Bronx Bombers are in a far better position than their counterparts from Queens.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

The Yankees will hope that Jaime Garcia continues his improvement on Wednesday night.

The veteran left-hander will be making his third start in pinstripes after his rollercoaster of a trade deadline that sent him to Minnesota and then on to the Big Apple.

The southpaw is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA for the Bronx Bombers. He’s 4-7 with a 4.30 ERA overall in 2017. He’s been a solid, though unspectacular, arm.

In his first start with the Yankees, he allowed six runs in 4.2 innings against the Indians. He did strikeout four, but also walked four. In his second start, he lasted an extra inning and gave up three less runs. It was still shy of a quality start, but it was enough for New York to steal a win against Boston. He did still walk three and give up a pair of homers in the start.

Interestingly, Garcia has been great at avoiding the long ball before that start, going five consecutive start without giving up a home run.

Garcia spent his career in the NL before the deadline and has faced the Mets nine times. He’s 2-5 against them with a 3.00 ERA in nine starts. He’s lost to them twice this year, but threw well in his last start, going seven innings and allowing only two runs.

To counter Garcia, the Mets turn to right-hander Seth Lugo.

Lugo has a solid 5-3 record in 12 games and has a 4.85 ERA in 68.2 innings of work. He’s completely lost it recently. He’s got a 6.55 ERA in his last four starts while allowing the opposition to hit .329 against him.

Lugo has faced the Yankees just once in his career. He pitched one inning—in relief—while allowing one run in that outing.

LIVE BETTING

The Mets offense is now without both Lucas Duda and Jay Bruce. Those are two big thumpers. Yes, both are streaky, but when each is one their game, they can both carry a team.

The Yankees offense has gone cold, too, with Aaron Judge looking a lot like the 2016 edition rather than the all-world version from the first-half.

On offense alone, both teams have had some struggles. On the mound, the same thing can be said of the starters. The differentiator between these teams as they are playing now is likely the bullpen.

The Yankees have Dellin Betances, Tommy Kahlne and David Robertson feeding into Aroldis Chapman. While Chapman has blown two saves in the second half and has seen his strikeout rate drop, he’s still struck out more than a batter per inning in the second half.

The foursome at the back of the Yanks pen effectively shorten the game two six innings.

The Mets, on the other hand, traded away their only dependable reliever: Addison Reed. They did add A.J. Ramos from the Marlins to fill his spot, but they’re back to where they started: an okay closer with question marks between the starter and the ninth.

QUICK PICK

The Yankees haven’t played their best baseball since the break, but the team is 4-4 in their last eight games and do have the better bullpen, better starter and more balanced offense. The Mets are 4-2 in their last six, but most of those came against the Phillies. Before that, they lost seven of eight.

Look for the Bronx Bombers to scratch across a few runs behind the red-hot bat of Didi Gregorius. Even with Aaron Judge slumping, there’s enough thump in this order to get a lead against Lugo and turn that over to a very good Yankee bullpen.

MLB Odds: Yankees 9, Mets 4
