ODDS ANALYSIS
The Yankees showed a ton of fight in their series against the Orioles, coming back from an eight run deficit and then a seven run deficit to get the unlikely win on Friday and then continued fight the rest of the series, blowing out the Birds on Saturday and clawing on Sunday.
The Jays haven’t shown that fight this year. They seem dejected and given their dismal record, it’s not hard to understand why. Nevertheless, there’s little fight in this team, particularly with Josh Donaldson out.
Despite all of this, the Jays are coming off a win and the Yankees are coming off an 11-inning whirlwind of a loss coming into this series so there’s at least a bit of momentum on Toronto’s side, but the big picture still favors New York by a hefty margin.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
This game will pin a young gun in Marcus Stroman against a grizzled veteran in C.C. Sabathia
Both of these starters had pretty promising Aprils with Stroman allowing two or less runs in four of his five starts and Sabathia seemingly reinventing himself with a very good start. Sabathia, however, has stumbled in his last two starts. His last one was the worst, allowing seven runs in 5.2 innings against the Orioles over the weekend.
His last game really inflated Sabathia’s numbers. He’s now 2-1, as the Yankees were able to come back and get the win on Friday night, but his ERA is 4.34 and his WHIP is 1.345. He’s walking too many batters overall and his FIP is up to 5.20 as a result.
This will be the first game for Sabathia against the Jays this year. He was 0-3 against them in four starts last year, but actually pitched pretty well with just nine earned runs allowed in 26 innings pitched while limited the hits to 20 and walks to just six.
In his career, he’s done pretty well against most of the Jays hitters, too. Justin Smoak has touched him up for a couple dingers in 17 at bats and Jose Bautista, Steve Pearce and Russell Martin have all also gone yard on him. Martin has caught him in the past, too, so he has that going for him.
Still, overall, most key Jays don’t hit Sabathia well. Bautista is just 5-for-40 with 10 strikeouts.
As for Stroman, he’s throwing the ball well. He’s already got two complete games and 36.1 innings in five starts. He’s pitching to a 2.97 ERA and 1.183 WHIP with just two home runs allowed. Ultimately, he’s pitching like they expected him to last year.
Save for a tough outing against Boston, he’s been very, very good, with just six runs allowed in the other four games. He’s 5-2 in his career against New York and has a 2.17 against the Yankees.
Brett Gardner does have two homers against him, but is just 5-for-22 overall. He’s allowed just one hit to Jacoby Ellsbury in 20 at bats and has held down Didi Gregorius and Chase Headley to a combined 4-for-25.
LIVE BETTING
Speaking of Gregorius, the Yankee shortstop came off the disabled list this weekend and looks to have not missed a beat from last year. Gregorius looked fully up to speed at the plate and made some insane plays in the field against the O’s.
With him back in the fold, that moves Ronald Torreyes back into a utility role, deepening the team overall and giving Joe Giardi some more late game options.
Greg Bird still isn’t hitting and Chris Carter hasn’t been much better giving the team a hole at first in the lineup, but both at least provide a threat of power. Meanwhile, the rest of the team is red hot. Aaron Judge, in particular, looks like an All-Star. He was overmatched last year striking out all of the time, but he’s already hit 10 home runs.
While the Jays have had a few players step up with their injuries, the Jays haven’t been so fortunate. Both Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki are injured and Tulo is one of few Jays players with a history of success against Sabathia.
Kevin Pillar and Justin Smoak lead this team offensively which is more a reflection of the likes of Bautista, Morales and Devon Travis than anything else. Travis is still hitting well below the Mendoza line as is Bautista.
QUICK PICK
The Yankees loss in the series finale to the Orioles was a bit of a heartbreaker, but they still came away with the series win and are still rolling.
Sure, New York has been nearly unbeatable at home and less impressive on the road, but this Yankees team still has the momentum heading into the series.
New York’s bullpen is also better. Roberto Osuna and Jason Grilli are both struggling while the Yankees’ pen has Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances and Tyler Clippard at the end and ranks amongst the best in baseball.
Stroman is the better bet on the mound going into this game and while he’s completed two games already, it’s hard to see him doing that again so early in the season. He’s too important to the Jays in the long run to risk too much use this early. The pen will have to pitch and this Yankees team has continued to find a way to surprise and get the win.
MLB Odds: Yankees 6, Blue Jay 4
