Odds-Padres-at-Giants

Jeff Samardzija wanted to come to San Francisco and the Giants wanted him. The partnership has worked out so far. The right-hander looks to continue his solid start in the series finale against the light-hitting Padres.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The Padres were shut out five times in their first 10 games of the season, an MLB record for futility. In nine games since getting blanked in Philadelphia on Apr. 14, they’ve averaged nearly four runs per contest with the over going 7-2 in those games.

The Giants look to close out their 10-game homestand on a winning note. They opened by getting swept in a four-game set by Arizona, just the second time since ATT Park opened that San Francisco dropped a four-game series. That was part of a stretch where the Giants lost eight of nine games leaving them ahead of only San Diego in the NL West standings. The Giants took two of three from Miami over the weekend with a resurgent offense that scored 19 times and played above the total in all three games.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

San Diego’s Andrew Cashner (1-1, 4.29 ERA) turned in a solid performance and picked up his first win of the year Friday against St. Louis. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. The only run off him came on a solo homer.

After struggling in his first two starts of the season, Cashner has given up just a single run in 6.0 innings of his last two outings, lowering his ERA to a respectable 4.29. He is 2-5 with a 4.99 ERA against San Francisco in his career.

Jeff Samardzija (2-1, 3.00 ERA) picked up his second win of the season by allowing one run and six hits over 7.2 innings to the Marlins on Friday night. He was given a three-run lead in the first inning which was more than he’d need in a game which he dominated the Miami hitters. He’s received 15 runs of support in his two wins.

Samardzija has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his four starts and lowered his ERA to 3.00. He is 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in six lifetime outings, including four starts, against the Padres.

LIVE BETTING

Over the years the Padres have often had a strong bullpen. It’s been built to throw in pitcher-friendly Petco Park. That’s not the case so far in 2016. In fact, the San Diego bullpen is in shambles. In the last two games of a weekend series with St. Louis, six San Diego relievers combined to allow 15 runs, all earned, on 18 hits in eight innings, with four homers, four walks and five strikeouts.

The Cardinals won 11-2 on Saturday night, scoring 10 runs over the final three innings. The Padres built a 5-3 lead on Sunday before the pen caved in and gave up five runs over the last four frames. “It wasn’t our best effort,” manager Andy Green said of the relief performances Saturday and Sunday. Um, yeah, that’s an understatement.

QUICK PICK

The Padres have not had a lot of success against their division rivals in ATT Park over the past few years. And while the teams enter the series at the bottom of the NL West standings, the talent difference is drastic. San Diego is without its starting third and second baseman, and opening day starter, all of whom are on the disabled list. The bullpen has been a mess and the team lacks timely hitting.

With a chance to end their long homestand on a positive note before heading back east, the Giants are in a good spot against Cashner, who they’ve pounded at ATT Park.

MLB Odds: San Francisco 6, San Diego 3
