ODDS ANALYSIS

The Dodgers and Giants are separated by 31.5 games in the standings. The Dodgers have the game’s best pitching staff while the Giants have one of the worst. Los Angeles has a top tier offense. San Francisco has the third worst.

Outside of sharing a division, it’s hard to fine two more different teams. The Dodgers should run away with the victory in every game against the Giants. Nevertheless, that’s not how baseball works.

We constantly hear that any team can beat any other team on any given day. Well, there’s no better testament to that than the Giants’ 6-4 record against the Dodgers in their first 10 meetings.

Despite that, the trends still point heavily in the Dodgers’ favor. Los Angeles has won five straight games heading into the series and are 16-2 in their last 18 games. Since the beginning of June, the Dodgers are 38-10. Overall, they’ve scored 524 runs and only allowed 343. The Giants have allowed 519 runs and only scored 407. San Fran is also 18-30 since the start of June.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

Sunday’s game is not the premiere pitching matchup of the series, but is an interesting one with Matt Cain against Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Cain has not won a game since the middle of May. He’s 3-9 with a 5.45 ERA this seasons.

The veteran right-hander has been a below-average pitcher since 2012. He’s coming off a start where he allowed six runs in four innings and has allowed at least five runs in five of his last eight starts.

While nearly every other start has been a disaster, Cain is 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this year. He’s allowed just a single run on seven hits and four walks in 12.2 innings.

There is just something about Cain that the Dodgers cannot figure out. He’s pitched to a 3.35 ERA in his career against L.A., throwing 204 innings. Despite the ERA, however, he’s just 7-11 against the Dodgers.

On the other side, Ryu has been solid when healthy and on the mound. He’s only 3-6, but has a 4.17 ERA and 101 ERA+. That’s an average Major League starter which looks good compared to Cain.

Ryu has been a model of consistency in his last four starts, pitching between five and five and two-thirds innings in all four, allowing two runs in each. Ryu won’t shut you down, but he’ll keep his team in the game.

In his last start against the Giants, Ryu went six innings and gave up just a single run. He’s 4-5 against San Francisco in his career with a 3.79 ERA, but most of those starts came against a very different—and better—Giants team.

In their careers, both Buster Posey and Hunter Pence have handled Ryu. Posey is 8-for-25 with a homer while Pence is 11-for-25 with seven RBIs. Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford, however, are 7-for-30 combined.

LIVE BETTING

Since the All-Star break, the Dodgers have continued to roll. Cody Bellinger is one of four players with at least three homers in the last two weeks and one of seven batters with an average of at least .295.

The team’s leading second-half hitter has been Chris Taylor, going 24-for-48 with five doubles, three triples and a pair of homers.

Meanwhile, the Giants have Posey and little else in the second half. Posey just keeps on hitting, but Belt has struck out 12 times in 40 at bats.

As a team, the Giants have four home runs in the second half.

QUICK PICK

The Dodgers are at home, boast the better offense, have the better starting pitching matchup and have a superior bullpen. Really, the Dodgers have the edge in every part of the game.

Los Angeles should run away with this game easily except the Giants have had Los Angeles’s number.

Despite the surprisingly poor numbers against San Francisco, the Dodgers should walk away with the win on Sunday night.

Look got Ryu to go five or six innings before Dave Roberts mixes and matches for a couple innings before going to Pedro Baez and Kenley Jansen in the eighth and ninth to slam the door if the game is even close.

MLB Odds: Dodgers 7, Giants 3
