First pitch for the game between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets is scheduled for Monday, May 8, 2017, at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field. The matchup can be seen live on ESPN.
Sure, the New York Mets have rallied the last few games, but they’re in shambles without Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes and so many others. The San Francisco Giants are also a mess of a team as despite preseason optimism, neither seem much like playoff squads a little more than a month into the year.

ODDS ANALYSIS
There are injuries, injuries everywhere for both teams.
The Giants are dealing with life without Brandon Crawford, Denard Span and Jarrett Parker, leaving them to fill three holes in the everyday lineup. With no good back up options and Eduardo Nunez and Hunter Pence both still OPSing under .700, that leaves only a few players to do damage.
The young Christian Arroyo could be one of the players to help, but aside from a pair of homers, he’s provided little boost to this team. Same can be said for the grizzled veteran, Mike Morse who had a big performance upon his return to the majors and little since.
The Mets are equally cursed. Pitching injuries aside, they’ve got Cespedes and Lucas Duda, a couple of power hitters, on the shelf.
Yo’s injury is the most costly on the position player side. He’s the heart and soul of this team. Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto have done their parts, but that’s not enough and Travis d’Arnaud’s bat has already gone MIA since a hot start, it seems likely Bruce’s bat will join in any time now given how streaky of a player he’s been his entire career.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Without Thor, Jacob deGrom is once again the de facto ace of this team and he’ll be on the bump to kick off a three game set on Monday night.
deGrom will be opposed by an enigma of a pitcher for the Giants in talented, but struggling, lefty Matt Moore.
With everything falling apart in the once vaunted Mets’ rotation, deGrom is the one constant. He’s the only one at this stage both healthy and performing well. He’s 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 1.364 WHIP in 36.2 innings spread over six starts. That’s just over six innings a start.
Granted, that WHIP is higher than most would like, but deGrom is striking out batters at a 12 per nine inning clip which is really good and though his walks are high, his FIP show he’s actually been a bit unlucky if anything.
While most of the news is good around deGrom, the 29-year is coming off his worst start of the year, throwing five innings of five run ball on Wednesday, allowing eight hits and walking five.
In his career against the Giants, he’s 3-1 with a 3.42 ERA and much more respectable 1.063 WHIP in 26.1 innings.
As for Moore, the former Ray just hasn’t been able to find his consistency since heading over to the Giants. His stuff is still there, but he cannot locate it well enough to really become an elite hurler. Instead, he’s one of the struggling pieces in a rotation that, like the Mets’, was supposed to be very good on paper, but has vastly underachieved.
Moore himself is 1-4 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.560 WHIP in 33.1 innings.
The Dodgers teed off on Moore on Tuesday, tallying nine runs on six hits and five walks in 3.1 innings. That was immediately after a one run, two hit, seven inning game that looked like he had figured something out.
Moore has allowed at least five runs in three of his last four starts and looks rather lost on the mound right now.
LIVE BETTING
Do not look for a clean game from the Mets. They’re cramming corner outfielders into center, have a starting catcher who cannot throw the ball and an aging infield with several key players having dealt with back issues.
That’s not a recipe for a good defensive team and the evidence to date bares that out, the Mets have made 23 errors in 27 games. They’ve given up 147 runs, the most in baseball, with 14 of them being unearned.
The Giants have some bullpen issues and an injured offense, but they’ve only allowed six unearned runs and have committed only 14 errors in 29 games.
QUICK PICK
The Giants play the better defense and have the better manager at the helm, but this game is at Citi Field and Jacob deGrom is on the mound, two key factors in this game.
The Mets have also been playing surprisingly strong baseball, winning four of six and having the offense score at least five runs in seven straight including putting up 16, even without Cespedes, on Wednesday.
Look for Moore to continue to struggle, deGrom to do enough to hold down a depleted Giants’ offense and the Mets’ bullpen with Jeurys Familia back at the end to close this one down.
MLB Odds: Mets 6, Giants 3
