ODDS ANALYSIS/INFO
San Francisco is 34-22 on the year and in first place in the NL West. They currently have a 6 game lead over the Dodgers. The Giants are 18-11 on the road - the best in baseball. This is an even numbered year which means they will be a tough out for any team come October.
The Cardinals are 28-26 on the year but just 13-15 at home. St. Louis trails the Cubs by 10 games in the NL Central.
The Cardinals lead the National League in errors - that’s not what we are use to seeing from a St. Louis team. This could be the worst Cardinals team in decades. They have average starting pitching, pathetic defense and hot and cold hitting. They need to start getting it going in order to make the playoffs and their only shot is a wildcard bid because the Cubs are running away with the NL Central.
This is the third of six games between these two squads in 2016.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
Jake Peavy (2-5, 6.34) finally looked like the old Jake Peavy of year’s past in his last outing. He earned just his second win of the year by hurling 7 strong innings, giving up just one hit and no runs. The seven innings matched Peavy’s longest outing of the season. The right-hander, who turned 35 on Tuesday, lowered his ERA from 7.26 to 6.34. The Giants need more of this from the veteran if they plan on making a World Series run in October.
The Cardinals will send Carlos Martinez (5-5, 3.69) to face the surging Giants. Martinez has been the best on the St. Louis staff thus far in 2016, but seems to lose his concentration when things don’t go his way. Maybe it’s immaturity or maybe he gets frustrated with the lack of run support. The Cardinals are averaging just under three runs per game in his starts. In his last start, he tossed eight innings during Monday's win against Milwaukee, in which he only allowed five hits and a walk while fanning eight. Martinez cruised against the Brewers, and the only thing that prevented him from going the distance was that he needed 104 pitches to complete eight frames. Still, this was Martinez's best start of the season, and he lowered his ERA to a very respectable 3.69 mark.
THE PICK
Jake Peavy pitched well in his last start - that’s the good news - the bad news is he only has two wins on the year and a ERA of 6.34. He faces a tall task in shutting down a hungry Cardinals team that desperately needs to string multiple wins together. Peavy is the Giants fifth starter and he faces the Cardinals No. 1 starter.
When Carlos Martinez is on, he is one of the best young pitchers in the game. The Cardinals faithful will energize Martinez and the rest of the St. Louis players and catapult them to a much needed win.
When the odds come out for this game, the Cardinals will be a slight favorite with a game total around 8 runs.
