A solid matchup of National League powerhouses will close out the week’s slate on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball when Jake Peavy leads the NL West leading Giants into battle against Carlos Martinez and the Cardinals.
You can bet on MLB odds at BookMaker.eu every day of the season.
ODDS ANALYSIS
Heading into the third of a four game series with the Braves in Atlanta, the Giants stood 3-2 on the trip and looked to build upon their 17-10 road record that’s tied for second best in the NL with the Washington Nationals. The duo trails only the Cubs for the best road record in the league. Playing .629 ball in the visitor’s role has earned bettors $651 to date.
The odds of St. Louis winning the NL this season are getting longer and longer as the season progresses. Though Mike Matheny’s squad just took two of three from the Brew Crew in Milwaukee, they still reside in third place within the division nine games back of the front running Cubs. Their odds to win the NL currently check in at 16:1, but you can expect to see even more value in that line should they drop this series to the Giants.
PITCHING MATCHUP
With the Giants starting rotation extremely top heavy with Madison Bumgarner leading the charge and newcomers Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija holding up their end of the bargains, the final two slots have been downers to say the least. Does running Jake Peavy and his bloated 6.34 ERA out to the mound every fifth day make more sense than giving some new blood a shot?
In the eyes of upper management… Yes. San Fran’s 5-6 in his 11 starts to date, and he’s been at his absolute worst away from AT&T Park where his ERA jumps up to 7.20. He has however thrown well at Busch where he owns a career 2.25 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.
Unlike San Francisco, there hasn’t been a single pitcher that’s stepped to the forefront and run with staff ace honors. The collective effort has been decent with three pitchers owning 3.00+ ERAs with both Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha struggling. One of those three is Carlos Martinez who most pundits had pegged of turning into the Redbirds No. 1 pitcher one day.
That one day still looks to be down the road with him just 5-5 with a 3.69 ERA and K/BB ratio of 50:21. Good numbers, but certainly not staff ace-esque. Unfortunately for the Cards in this spot, he’s been at his absolute worst at Busch where he’s 2-4 with a bloated 5.03 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.
LIVE BETTING SCENARIO
I’m simply not a believer in the Cardinals this season. As we move deeper into the season, I fully expect them to full further and further away from the pack. The starting pitching is questionable at best, and I just don’t see the young hitting keeping up their torrid pace.
Still, live betting this one relies solely upon the shoulders of Jake Peavy. It’s more or less been all or nothing for him this season with him failing to go more than five innings in six of his 11 starts. In the five he went deeper in, San Fran won three. He enters this outing off back-to-back solid starts, but the opposition faced was questionable in San Diego and Atlanta.
If he manages to keep the game close through five innings, San Fran no doubt has a shot. If he doesn’t, the Giants long arms won’t be able to keep the Redbirds offense from putting crooked numbers on the board. Live bet accordingly.
