ODDS ANALYSIS

The Nationals are 66-45 on the season and seven games ahead of the rest of the pack in the National League East. Washington should win the division but the bigger goal is chasing down the Cubs for the best record in the National League to get home field advantage in the postseason. It won’t be easy, as Chicago is very talented, and the Nationals must keep it up against top teams like Cleveland.

The Indians are 62-47 on the season, two games ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. There are several teams clumped together in the playoff race in the A.L. and not all will make it, so the Indians must continue playing well.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

The Nationals are scheduled to throw left-hander Gio Gonzalez. He is 7-9 with a 4.13 ERA, striking out an average of 8.53 batters per nine innings. Gonzalez is a solid veteran who should be able to keep his team in the game.

The Indians will send Mike Clevinger to the mound for a spot start. Cleveland has a fantastic rotation but Clevinger isn’t usually in it, and he has just a 0-1 record and 6.97 ERA on the season. He has to pitch better than that to give his team a shot.

LIVE BETTING

The Nationals’ headliner this season in the lineup was expected to be star Bryce Harper, but it’s actually been second baseman Daniel Murphy. He is batting .350 on the season with 21 homers, 81 RBIs and a 1.004 OPS. Harper has struggled of late and is batting just .233, although he does have 20 home runs and an .812 OPS.

The Indians are led by Mike Napoli, who is batting .253 with 28 home runs and 79 RBIs, while Carlos Santana is hitting .244 with 24 homers and 61 RBIs. Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis are a nice-hitting middle infield duo, which helps an offense big-time when traditionally light-hitting positions are manned by solid players.

QUICK PICK

The offenses for these two teams are similar, with the Indians a little bit better. However, the presence of Gonzalez as the starter gives the Nationals a decided advantage. Clevinger is a fringe major leaguer and is just a fill-in, and he hasn’t shown the ability to consistently shut down major league hitters. Harper has struggled for a couple months but this could be a breakout game for him against an overmatched pitcher in MLB odds.

MLB Odds: Nationals 6, Indians 5
