The Mets are on the road but they will send the superior pitchers to the hill, which could give them a slight edge in MLB wagering.

ODDS ANALYSIS
The New York Mets won the National League pennant a year ago and have some of the best starting pitching in the majors. They are 31-14 on the season, barely trailing the Washington Nationals for first place in the National League East. That’s a battle that figures to be waged all season, with the runner-up aiming to secure a wild card berth. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in second place in the National League Central at 30-26 but have an uphill climb to catch the Chicago Cubs, who have the best record in the league. Both of these teams have legitimate playoff ambitions and this showdown is important even though the season is still young.
PROBABLE PITCHERS
The Mets’ starter is slated to be Jacob DeGrom. He is 3-1 on the season with a 2.62 ERA and has registered a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the past two seasons to begin his career -- a feat which is very tough to accomplish. DeGrom’s strikeout numbers are down a little bit this season but he has still been very good, and will pose a challenge to a Pirates lineup which has been one of the best in the National League this year.
The Pirates are expected to counter with Juan Nicasio. He is 4-4 with a 4.75 ERA on the season. Nicasio has nearly struck out a batter per inning in his 10 starts but has been prone to wildness and giving up home runs. Nicasio has the arsenal to have a good performance but is more erratic than DeGrom and therefore can’t be counted on as assuredly. The Mets’ offense hasn’t been very good in 2016, so Nicasio could come away with a nice outing if he can avoid walks.
LIVE BETTING
DeGrom is one of several impressive starting pitchers for New York, and that group once again has the team over .500 and competing for a playoff spot. If they can get there, they will be hard to beat since pitching is so important in a five- or -seven-game series. However, they have a tough foe in the division in the Nationals and might have to hold off a team like the Pirates for a wild card spot. The teams enter this contest with similar records and could each use the win.
The Pirates hope their offense can put across some runs on DeGrom. Star center field Andrew McCutchen is off to a slow start this year, batting .250 with nine homers, 24 RBIs and a .769 OPS, but he should turn it on as the season moves along. Starling Marte has been impressive, hitting .326 with five homers, 21 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and an .858 OPS. Gregory Polanco is another key piece as the Pirates have a deep, balanced lineup.
The Mets are led in hitting by Yoenis Cespedes, who is batting .277 with 15 homers, 37 RBIs and an impressive .942 OPS. Neil Walker has also been good, but overall New York has struggled at the plate. Third baseman David Wright is out six weeks with a neck injury, which will further test the depth of the offense.
QUICK PICK
This is a tough game to peg, since the Mets have the better pitcher but the Pirates counter with a solid offense and home field advantage. While it’s possible New York is the slightest of favorites with DeGrom on the mound, Nicasio has shown flashes of impressiveness. He can afford to attack the Mets lineup, and a good performance could put Pittsburgh in line for a close, low-scoring victory in MLB wagering.
