The New York Yankees have waved the white towel in the hunt for the playoffs this season, but would love to play spoiler against their biggest rival. The Boston Red Sox are in a tight race for the postseason and could really use a victory over the Yankees on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The Red Sox have an elite offense and a more established veteran as well as the home field advantage, so they should be the favorites in MLB wagering.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The Red Sox are 60-49 on the season, which is one game behind the Detroit Tigers for the second wild card spot. Boston’s run-differential of plus-89 is the best in the American League, so that’s a good sign, but the season is dwindling and the Red Sox need to start making up ground on their foes. The Orioles currently lead the American League East but Boston is only 2.5 games back.

The Yankees have a 56-55 record but have traded away many of their top players and are looking forward to 2017. Star relievers Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller have been dealt, as has veteran outfielder Carlos Beltran. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez announced he will retire on Friday so this will be one of his final games if he starts.

PROBABLE PITCHERS

The Red Sox are scheduled to start Rick Porcello. He has a record of 14-3 with a 3.46 ERA on the season. Porcello signed a big-money deal with the team heading into 2015 and didn’t perform well, but has lived up to expectations this season.

The Yankees will counter with youngster Luis Severino. He is one of the team’s top prospects but has struggled in his first taste of the big leagues, compiling a 1-6 record and a 6.02 ERA in 10 starts. Severino has good stuff but could have a tough time of it against an excellent Red Sox offense.

LIVE BETTING

Boston has scored 593 runs on the year, which is the most in baseball. David Ortiz’s retirement is right around the corner but he’s going out with a bang. Ortiz is batting .309 with 25 home runs and 87 RBIs this season with a 1.013 OPS. Mookie Betts has turned into a star, hitting .310 with 23 home runs, 73 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and an .896 OPS. Xander Bogaerts is another star, batting .319 with 14 homers and 67 RBIs, while Dustin Pedroia, Jackie Bradley, Jr., Travis Shaw and Hanley Ramirez have all been excellent pieces.

The Yankees’ offense isn’t as strong, and is weaker now after the trade of Beltran as he led the team in several offensive categories. Veteran outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner sit atop the order but aren’t having great years. Catcher Brian McCann has been good, but veterans Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez have struggled. It’s unknown if those two will play in the game, with Rodriguez possibly getting the nod since he’s going to retire at the end of the week.

QUICK PICK

The Red Sox are the more talented team and have a stronger starting pitcher. It will be hard for Severino to navigate such a tough lineup, and the Red Sox have been good at home this year. All signs point toward a Boston victory, so it would be an upset if the Yankees pull out the win in MLB wagering.
