The Texas Rangers might be 47-50, but they’re doing everything they can at the trade deadline to try to make a push towards the playoffs in the wide open American League. Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees is pivotal to keep the mindset of buying at the July 31 deadline instead of selling.
ODDS ANALYSIS
The Yanks have won seven out of nine since the All-Star Break, and that's why they're now up +4.49 units this year. All of that growth has come in the last week or so, but this road trip to Texas and the South Side of Chicago could be dangerous after taking two out of three in Minnesota.
Texas is the only team in the American League with profits to show for this season in spite of the fact that it has a losing record. The Rangers are up 11.07 units, and are actually fourth-best in the bigs.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Very quietly, Masahiro Tanaka has won his last three starts for the Yankees, and he's led them to five straight wins in his starts.
The Japanese star has allowed just 10 runs in his last four outings, posting quality starts in each, which is about all that could be asked out of him after all of his arm troubles the last two seasons.
We'll talk about the abused Texas bullpen in a minute, but the fact that this unit has been so beaten up makes it all the more imperative that Martin Perez goes deep into this game.
This is just his third start of the season off of the disabled list, and the numbers haven't been pretty. Perez has six walks against just four strikeouts, and that flat out cannot keep up if he wants to help lead Texas back towards the postseason.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"It would not surprise me if we don't make a deal. Our rotation is set, our bullpen's as strong as any in baseball. Our lineup, once we've gotten everyone healthy, has been productive throughout." – Yankees GM Brian Cashman on his confidence he has in his team going into the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline
SITUATIONAL BETTING
Oh, that beaten up Texas bullpen! The Rangers have used the third most pitchers in their bullpen over the course of the last week, and those men have combined to post a 4.79 ERA and an alarming 5.90 FIP.
Texas has averaged over three innings per game from its bullpen since the All-Star break, and there really isn't such a thing as a light day for this unit with as bad as this rotation has been at times.
PROP TALK
Maybe we all need to give Alex Rodriguez a little break. The convicted steroid-user has hit four bombs already in the second half of the year, and like it or not, he's turning into the most pivotal piece in the Yanks’ lineup.
Would you bet against a man who just jacked three 420+ foot homers in one game on Saturday? We certainly wouldn't.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
This is the exact situation the Rangers have been thriving off of all season long. They're going to be home underdogs against a team which has been nothing special on the road, and they're clearly going to be sharp to play as well.
Tanaka might be throwing well, but we still don't see that velocity where we want it. Backing Perez is a risk, but it's one we're willing to take on one of the best money teams in the bigs.
